The 13th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team stepped out of Southern Conference play Saturday evening travelling to Charlottesville and droppped an 18-10 decision to No. 5 Virginia at Klockner Stadium. The loss snaps the Spiders three-game winning streak and marks their fourth loss of the year – all coming against teams ranked in the top 10 in the country and the third loss coming against a team ranked No. 5 or higher this year. Richmond is now 4-4 on the season with losses to No. 1 Duke, No. 2 North Carolina, No. 5 Virginia and No. 10 Loyola (rankings at time of games). Sophomore attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) led the Spiders offensively as he remained hot, scoring three goals in the loss. Young has scored 19 of his 24 goals this season in the last four contests with Saturday's three-goal output his lowest total in the last four games. Sophomore attack Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) added two goals while senior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) extended his point-scoring streak to 38-straight games with a goal and an assist. The Spiders opened the scoring under three minutes into the game as midfielder Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) scored his fifth of the season for the early lead. Virginia (8-2) responded with four-straight goals and seven out of the next eight goals, taking a 7-2 lead after the first quarter. Richmond out-scored the Cavaliers 3-2 in the second quarter, starting with a man-up goal from Connell. Lanchbury and Young added tallies in the quarter as the Spiders went into the halftime trailing by four, 9-5. Young pulled the Spiders within three early in the third quarter with a man-up goal and added his third of the game making it an 11-7 contest. Virginia put the game out of reach with a six-goal swing, taking a 17-7 advantage with 8:35 remaining in the fourth quarter. Sophomore defensive midfielder Mustang Sally (Denver, Colo.) scored his first career goal in transition late in the game. Freshmen Luke Grayum (Ardmore, Pa.) and Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for the Spiders. Richmond returns to Southern Conference action next weekend when it travels to Macon, Ga., for a meeting against Mercer April 11. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
