The Oregon women's lacrosse team built a six-goal lead over California early in the second half and then survived a comeback attempt by the Golden Bears to leave Berkeley with a 9-8 win on Friday night at California Memorial Stadium. The Ducks (2-8, 2-4 Pac-12) got their final road trip of the spring off to a strong start while completing a regular-season sweep of the Golden Bears after picking up a 14-9 victory last month in Eugene. How it Happened: Cal (2-10, 0-6 Pac-12) scored six minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead, but freshman Nakeeya McCardell responded for the Ducks five minutes later on a pass from sophomore Katie Collins. Freshman Haley Cummins gave Oregon its first lead of the day at the 15:24 mark with her third goal of the season. Freshman Lindsay Clarke put Oregon back in front with a goal less than a minute after Cal evened the score, and Collins followed with an unassisted goal of her own to make it 4-2. The Golden Bears cut Oregon's lead to one just a minute later, but the Ducks answered with three straight scores to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Collins scored her second of the half on a free-position attempt, and scoring leaders Hanna Hilcoff and Lillian Stump each followed with their first goals of the game to give Oregon a four-goal advantage. Oregon extended its scoring run to 5-0 to open the second half, with Morgan McCarthy finding the net on a free-position shot before Stump scored her second of the day on an assist from Hilcoff. But Cal came storming back with a 5-0 run of its own over the next 22-plus minutes, cutting Oregon's lead to 9-8 with 5:43 left in the game. The Ducks were unable to muster any more offense down the stretch, but the defense kept the pressure on the Golden Bears. Cal had a decent look with 2:35 remaining, but the shot ricocheted off the post. The home team had one more chance after an Oregon turnover with 35 seconds left and took a timeout with five seconds remaining, but Cal's final shot was blocked and the Ducks held on for the victory. Who Stood Out: Seven different players scored for the Ducks, with Stump and Collins each finding the back of the net twice. Clarke, Cummins, Hilcoff, McCardell and McCarthy each had one goal, and Collins and Hilcoff each recorded an assist. Logan Gierke and Olivia Mannon each had three caused turnovers to lead the defense while Lexie Likins forced two, and Hilcoff grabbed five draw controls. Senior Alle Dunbar notched three saves in net while allowing a season-low eight goals. Notable: Collins led the Ducks with three total points, her first career game of three points or more … Stump scored multiple goals for the eighth time this season and 22nd time in her career, while Collins recorded the first multi-goal game of her career … Hilcoff has now scored in 17 straight games to open her collegiate career … Oregon had the advantage on total shots (25-20) for the first time this season … UO caused double-digit turnovers (12) for the fifth time this season. Up Next: The Ducks will play at Fresno State on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT. The game against the Bulldogs replaces Oregon's originally-scheduled contest at Stanford, which was canceled due to COVID-19 developments within the Cardinal program.
