The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team had a golden opportunity to knock off No. 3 Maryland on Saturday at Franklin Field. However, a spectacular save by UM goalkeeper Danny Dolan forced overtime, and the Terps took care of business just 18 seconds into the extra period to escape Philadelphia with a 13-12 win. Saturday's game was the season opener for the Quakers, while the Terrapins improved to 3-0 on the young season. On an unseasonably sunny day in Philly, the Quakers gave Maryland all it could handle. Penn jumped right into the 2019 season, scoring twice before Saturday's game was two minutes old as Tyler Dunn and then Adam Goldner netted unassisted tallies. Maryland's Louis Dubick got one of those back, but Joe Licciardi finished a Simon Mathias feed and Keyveat Postell scored off a Sean Lulley feed to make it 4-1. Logan Wisnauskas made it 4-2 after one period. As it turned out, that second UM goal was the start of a dominant second quarter by the Terps. In all, Maryland scored five unanswered goals—making it a six-goal run bridging the quarters—before Penn stunned the Terps with a goal right at the buzzer, Kyle Gallagher winning the faceoff and feeding Mathias for the score. UM's lead was 7-5 at he break. Maryland opened the third-quarter scoring with two goals, but Penn hung around as Goldner and then Dunn scored four minutes apart to make it a 9-7 game entering the final period. Lulley then scored just six seconds into the fourth, making it 9-8, but Maryland appeared to regain control as Wisnauskas and Dubick (3 goals on the day) scored 53 seconds apart to give the visitors an 11-8 lead with less than 10 minutes to play. To its credit, Penn didn't quit. Matt McIlwrick got the bench roaring with an unassisted end-to-end effort to make it 11-9, and that momentum carried over as just 30 seconds later the Quakers scored a man-up goal with Mathias finding Mitch Bartolo.. Just 52 seconds later, Sam Handley was rocketing his first collegiate goal into the net to tie things up at 11-11, and mere seconds after that Goldner was finishing a BJ Farrare feed directly off the faceoff. Penn's four-goal run took 1:27 of game time and turned an 11-8 deficit into a 12-11 lead. The Franklin Field crowd was rocking. Maryland settled things down, and tied it back up with 2:58 left in regulation as Wisnauskas (4 goals on the day) finished a feed from Jared Bernhardt (2 goals, 4 assists). Penn had a golden opportunity to end it in regulation. With Maryland holding the ball and slightly less time on the shot clock than there was on the game clock, a turnover ended up in the stick of a Penn player. The Quakers quickly got the ball down the field and had a point-blank shot that would have been the winner. Unfortunately, Dolan was equal to the task and came across his body to make the game-saving stop. On the opening faceoff in the extra session, Maryland emerged with the ball from a scrum and had a fast-break opportunity. The Terps made the most of it, Nick Brozowski finding Roman Puglise for the winning goal. Goldner finished the day with three goals and an assist, while Tyler Dunn scored twice. Mathias finished with a goal and three assists. Junkin finished with 12 saves for Penn, while Dolan had 18 stops for Maryland on a day when the Quakers outshot the Terps 46-41. Penn returns to action next Saturday at Duke, facing off with the Blue Devils at 3 p.m.
