BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Matt Chlastawa (Westfield, Mass.) scored 40 seconds into overtime to help visiting Bates College escape with a 10-9 win over Babson College in non-conference men's lacrosse at frigid MacDowell Field on Wednesday afternoon. Babson suffered its first loss of the season and drops to 2-1, while Bates evens its record at 1-1 on the year. Senior Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and junior Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) both scored twice, while senior Niall Dillon (Duxbury, Mass.) contributed a goal and two assists for the Beavers. Dillon and sophomore John Antaya (Duxbury, Mass.) both finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, and junior goalie Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made a season-high 15 saves in defeat. Chlastawa scored two goals and dished out two assists, junior Brendan Mullally (Baltimore, Md.) added two goals and one assist, and senior Andrew Small (Deerfield, Ill.) scored once and tied for game-high honors with two assists to lead the Bobcats. Senior Eli Cooper (Glastonbury, Conn.) won 14-of-22 face-offs and led all players with seven ground balls, while classmate Rocco Fantoni (Hauppage, N.Y.) caused two turnovers in the win. Fellow senior Mitchell Drake (Annapolis, Md.) stopped eight first-half shots and junior Rob Strain (Montclair, N.J.) made four saves after halftime to pick up his first win of the year. The Green and White started fast as Dillon, Mishkind and sophomore Alex Lesher (Scottsdale, Ariz.) all scored to build a 3-0 lead less than six minutes into the contest. Mullally got Bates on the board at the 7:16 mark of the first, and the visitors followed up a tally by first-year Trevor Tyrer (Northport, N.Y.) with four straight goals to take their first lead at 5-4 when junior Frank Spitz (Gladwyne, Pa.) picked up a ground ball and scored from in front of the crease just 2:11 from halftime. Allen tied the game 67 seconds into the third quarter, sophomore Quinn Schomp (Duxbury, Mass.) scored in transition off a feed from junior Tyler Patterson (Millstone Township, N.Y.) at 11:57, and sophomore Mason O'Hanlon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) capped a three-goal run that put Babson back in front 7-5 with 10:53 left in the stanza. Chlastawa scored and set up a goal as Bates tied the game just over four minutes later. Mishkind scored a man-up goal at 4:57, but Chlastawa set up first-year Jack Golden (Northport, N.Y.) to help the Bobcats pull even at 8-8 just 36 seconds later. Sophomore Jack Scribner (Falmouth, Maine) scored late in the possession clock to put Bates in front 9-8 with 8:40 remaining in the fourth, but after four empty trips the Beavers pulled even on Allen's tally with 59 seconds to go in regulation. The Bobcats put a pair of shots wide in the closing seconds but grabbed the opening face-off of the extra session following a long scramble and Chlastawa notched the game winner from the right wing 40 seconds into overtime. Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson travels to Union, while Bates hosts Middlebury. GAME NOTES • The Beavers and Bates have split their last eight meetings going back to 1979. • Dillon reached 100 points for his career with an assist on Mishkind's goal just over four minutes into the contest. • Going back to last season, Babson's last two losses have come in overtime and its last three defeats have come by a total of just four goals. • Wednesday's contest marked just the fifth time the Beavers have played an overtime game going back to the start of the 2015 campaign.
