The Springfield College men's lacrosse team dropped a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest to Babson, 9-5, on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field, as the Pride falls to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the league with the setback. With the win, Babson is now 6-5 overall with a 2-0 mark against NEWMAC opponents. The Beavers out shot Springfield College, 39-25, over 60 minutes of play, and scooped up 26 ground balls compared to the Pride's 23. Senior goalkeeper Cole Finerty (Kensington, N.H.) made 14 stops in between the pipes for the maroon and white, while junior midfielder Joseph Cameron (Stoneham, Mass.) was 11-for-17 at the face-off "x" with 10 ground balls. Babson was led by sophomore attackman John Calicchio (Gulfstream, Fla.), who notched three first-half goals and added an assist in the win, while six other Beavers found the back of the net at least once. In net, Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) only needed to make five stops to secure the win. Springfield College scored the first goal of the game when Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.) found a cutting Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash.) for an easy catch-and-finish to give the Pride a 1-0 lead at the 12:31 mark of the first quarter, before Babson evened the game when Calicchio found the back of the net with 9:34 to play in the first quarter. The Beavers would hold a 3-1 lead at the end of the first frame, as Alex Lesher (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished off a feed from Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.), before Mason O'Hanlon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) fired home a shot from the top of the box on a man-up play, which was fed to him from Calicchio. Opening the second quarter, Babson took a three-goal lead on a strike from Matthew MacCune (Braintree, Mass.), before Calicchio scored his second of the game on a feed from Niall Dillon (Duxbury, Mass.) at the 10:03 mark. Springfield College would end the run with a goal at 8:00 as Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) found an open Habich for a man-up strike, but Babson would answer just 3:44 later when Calicchio notched his third of the game on a cross-crease feed from Allen. Calicchio's third goal would give the Beavers a 6-2 lead at the halftime break. Babson pushed its lead to six with consecutive goals to start the second half, but Vail was able to shake his defender and get top side for an open shot, which he buried into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 8-3, Beavers, with 4:03 to play in the quarter. Babson regained its six-goal advantage with 58 seconds left when Ethan Carpenter (Orlando, Fla.) netted a jump shot after hauling in a feed from MacCune to end the frame. Springfield College was able to score twice in the fourth to pull back to within four, as Tommy Nash (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Patrick Watson (Franklin, Mass.) both found twine, but the rally fell short, resulting in the Pride's seventh loss of the year.
