DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2020) – Powered by a game-high eight points from sophomore Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College), the No. 10 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a convincing 19-8 victory over Georgian Court University in their home opener on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the second straight year and win their eighth straight home opener, while the Lions (0-1) fall in their season opener. Kearnan had a game-high six goals with two assists and junior Marty Shargel (Agoura Hills, Calif./Onondaga CC) had four goals. Junior Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had three goals and two assists and freshman TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had two goals and three assists. Sophomore Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) recorded two goals and two assists and junior Robert LoRicco (Guilford, Conn./University at Albany) had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Jack Kipnes (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) had his first career goal and senior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had an assist. Freshman Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) dished out two assists and senior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 18-for-24 on faceoffs with a game-high ten ground balls. Junior Sean Rigley (Pleasant Hill, Calif./Onondaga CC) had three ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore Thomas Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) played the first half in goal and made six saves to earn the win. Sophomore Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) made five saves in the second half. Georgian Court was led by P.J. Saracino who had a team-high three goals. Austin Geissel made 11 saves in three quarters to take the loss. Mercy wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as LoRicco scored at the 13:49 mark of the first quarter to make it 1-0. Shargel got in the scoring column just over three minutes later following a LoRicco pass to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead. Saracino netted his first to make it 2-1 before Shargel and Kearnan tallied back-to-back goals to put Mercy ahead, 4-1, with 4:25 remaining in the first quarter. Randy Collins and Daniel Burnham then put together two goals for the Lions to cut the Mavericks lead to one, 4-3. However, Gibbons and Scorcia scored goals in the final 2:09 to give Mercy a 6-3 lead after one quarter. Saracino opened the scoring in the second quarter to make it 6-4. Kearnan followed with two goals and Scorcia netted two more of his own to increase the Mercy lead to 10-4 with 10:08 left in the half. Shargel, Gibbons and Kearnan finished off a 7-0 run with goals to put the Mavericks up 13-4 at the 3:25 mark. A Thomas Heegan goal made it 13-5 before Heyder scored the final goal of the half to give Mercy a 14-5 halftime lead. Kearnan scored the lone two goals in the third quarter to put Mercy out in front, 16-5, after three quarters. Shargel, Kipnes and Heyder all scored in the fourth quarter to help put away the victory. Mercy held a 46-27 edge in shots, a 42-26 edge in ground balls and went 21-for-30 on faceoffs.
