Lewis' men's lacrosse team defeated Lake Erie College 9-7 in its inaugural contest on Saturday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) led the Flyers with four points while Cole Roth (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) finished with three points. Lewis (1-0) jumped on top with two goals in the first three minutes of the contest. Thomas Purfeerst (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) scored the first goal in program history 65 seconds into the game. Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) scored 1:40 later off an assist from Roth. The Storm (0-1) scored twice in the span of 71 seconds to even the score but the Flyers came right back scoring 35 seconds later to regain the lead as Kask scored an unassisted goal. LEC tied the score about halfway through the second period but Lewis would take the lead into the locker room at the break on Peter Carlson's (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) first goal of the season. The Storm scored twice in the span of 45 seconds in the third quarter to take its first lead of the contest but it would be short lived as the Flyers tied the game less than a minute later on Karl Flinter's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) first goal of the season. Lake Erie took a two-goal lead into the final 15 minutes scoring twice in the final two minutes of the third quarter. Lewis tied the game 1:34 into the final quarter converting on a man-up advantage as Flinter scored from Kask. Three minutes later the Flyers knotted the score at 7 on another man-up goal as Roth scored his second of the game. Kask netted the game-winner halfway through the final period with an assist from Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School). Roth added an insurance goal with less than three minutes to play for the final margin. Lewis outshot the Storm 32-30 in the contest and had picked up 23 ground balls to Lake Erie's 22. Carlson won 9-of-18 faceoffs while Josh Calvin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame College Prepatory HS) made 18 saves and picked up seven ground balls. The Flyers are back in action next Saturday as they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Mercyhurst at 10 a.m. (CST).
