Graduate student midfielder Nick Cunningham (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Loyola) knocked in a loose ball with 3:22 left for the game-winning goal as the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat ninth-ranked Mercy College, 12-11, on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field. Senior attackman Matt Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) opened the game's scoring 1:58 into the contest with his sixth goal of the season. Mercy evened the score at one apiece at the 8:51 mark as Tommy McPartland scored off a pass from Robert Guglielmo. Le Moyne regained the lead with 4:01 remaining in the opening quarter as sophomore attackman Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) finished off a feed from senior midfielder Ross Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus/Siena). Mercy started the scoring in the second quarter as Dominic Scorcia found the back of the net at the 13:27 mark off a pass from McPartland. Sheehan gave the Dolphins the lead back with 8:35 to go in the half after collecting a feed from senior midfielder Hans Zimmer (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa). The Mavericks answered back 59 seconds later on Brady Kearnan's eighth goal of the season. The Dolphins scored the next two goals for their first two-goal advantage of the day. Junior midfielder Evan Kelly (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) netted his first goal of the season with 5:45 left off a pass from Hutchings, who followed with his second goal of the game 35 seconds later. Mercy got within 5-4 at halftime as Marty Shargel scored with 3:46 left off a pass from McPartland. The Mavericks went on a 6-on-3 for the next minute, but had their first shot saved and then turned the ball over before getting off another shot. Senior attackman Riley Larson (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) opened the scoring in the third quarter with an unassisted tally just 49 seconds into the period. TJ Heyder answered back just 12 seconds later after receiving a feed from Jake Fitzgerald. Zimmer extended the lead back to two 25 seconds later with his fourth marker of the season. Following 10 minutes of scoreless play, Mercy netted three consecutive goals over the final three and one-half minutes of the quarter to take the lead. Scorcia got the Mavericks within one with 3:27 left and Kearnan followed with an unassisted tally of his own 45 seconds later to knot the score at seven. Scorcia put Mercy in front with 10 seconds left in the quarter after taking a pass from McPartland. Le Moyne scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to regain the lead. Hutchings evened the score at eight apiece just 1:01 into the period. He put the Dolphins in front for good with 11:53 left after taking a pass in an extra-man situation from Larson. Sophomore midfielder Colin Sypek (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage School) scored in transition with 10:35 to go for a 10-8 lead. Mercy got back within one with 7:27 left on Kearnan's third goal of the contest. The Dolphins pushed their lead to a game-high three with the next two goals. From the left edge of the crease, Sheehan tallied his third goal of the game with 6:55 left off a cross-crease pass from Sypek. Cunningham then recorded the eventual game-winning goal by swatting in a loose ball with 3:22 left after having his initial shot saved. Following a pair of turnovers by each team, Mercy scored twice in 26 seconds to get within one. McPartland found the back of the net with 1:21 left off a feed from Scorcia. In an extra-man situation off the ensuing faceoff, Shargel tallied his ninth goal of the year with 55 seconds to play off a feed from Heyder. The Mavericks won the ensuing faceoff and called timeout with 35 seconds left. They turned the ball over with 11 seconds left before getting a shot off. The Dolphins threw the ball away on the ensuing clear, giving the Mavericks one last possession with 4.9 seconds left. Following a Le Moyne timeout, Jack Gibbons was able to get a shot off from out front, but sent the shot wide as time expired. Senior goalkeeper Riley Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Onondaga C.C.) recorded 10 saves, including four in each of the second and third quarters, to earn the victory between the pipes. Thomas Umano turned away 17 shots, including six in the third quarter, in the loss for the Mavericks. Le Moyne (2-0), which split a pair of games with the Mavericks last year, returns to action on Saturday for its Northeast-10 Conference opener at Bentley University at 11:00 a.m.
