COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 4/4 Syracuse's upset bid of No. 2/2 Maryland came up just short as the Terrapins scored in overtime to record a 12-11 victory. The Orange are now 6-2 this season with their setbacks coming to the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams in the nation. "It was an exciting, back-and-forth game," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "Again, I credit the defense as it made saves and gave us possession and a chance to win the game. We were better in the second half today. There's a lot we can learn from today that we can use moving forward." HOW IT HAPPENED The Orange won the draw to start the first three-minute overtime period. After Gait called timeout, a turnover gave Maryland (6-0) possession. But the Terrapins also turned it over and Syracuse couldn't get off a shot before the clock ran out and the teams switched sides for the second three-minute session of the first overtime. This time Maryland won the draw and drew a free-position. Hannah Warther passed the ball to Kali Hartshorn, who put her shot in the back of the net for the game winner, giving the Terrapins their 80th consecutive home victory. GAME SUMMARY Syracuse led by one, 6-5, at halftime before Maryland opened the second half with a 5-1 scoring run to take its largest lead of the game 10-7, with 19:54 left in regulation. Junior Emily Hawryschuk and freshman Meaghan Tyrrell halted the run with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to one. After a Terps' goal by Caroline Steele, senior Nicole Levy and Hawryschuk each scored to even the score at 11-11. Neither team get the go-ahead goal for the final 11:55 of regulation, sending the game to sudden-victory overtime. OF NOTE Levy, Hawryschuk and Tyrrell each recorded four points to lead the Orange. Levy now has 195 career points, leaving her five points shy of becoming the 10th player in program history to record 200 points. Junior goalkeeper Asa Goldstock recorded 10 saves for the Orange, marking the second time this season she has reached double figures in saves. The Syracuse defense forced Maryland to commit 18 turnovers. UP NEXT The Orange's string of consecutive games against a ranked opponent continues Wednesday, March 13 when it takes on No. 16/rv Florida in Gainesville. The game will be broadcast on YouTube.
