COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A dominant defensive effort that held Ohio State to just one goal on 19 shots and forced 10 turnovers led the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team (7-0, 1-0 B1G) to a Big Ten opening 16-1 rout of Ohio State on Saturday afternoon. Today was Maryland's fifth-annual JDRF game, raising money for diabetes research . The Terps raised over $2,800 on the day for the JDRF Foundation and over $9,300 in total so far this year. "All in all, a great day for the Terps," said head coach Cathy Reese. "We held a team that's been putting up over 10 goals a game to one goal, all three goalies played great and had some awesome saves. Our defense was phenomenal. Our offense played really well too. Anytime you can raise a lot of money to support JDRF and come away with a win against a Big Ten opponent it's a great day!" The one goal by the Buckeyes is the least ever scored on Maryland by a Big Ten opponent and the second time this season that the Terps have held an opponent to just one goal after defeating UMBC 18-1 a few weeks back. It is the first time since 1996 that Maryland has held two opponents in one season to just one goal. Senior Megan Taylor led a perfect defensive first half, shutting Ohio State out. Taylor had eight saves to keep the Buckeyes off the board as Maryland led 12-0 at halftime, the first time Maryland has not allowed a goal in the first half since 2012 against Virginia Tech. Taylor's eighth and final save of the first half was the 600th of her career, becoming only the third Terp ever to reach that mark. The senior now has 77 saves this year to only 55 goals allowed, a .583 save percentage. Senior Shelby Mercer and sophomore Grace Griffin each had two caused turnovers to assist the Maryland goalkeepers on the defensive end. Freshman Maddie McSally came in goal to begin the second half and saved five shots while only allowing one goal, an .800 save percentage. McSally was then replaced by sophomore Madison Hine who saved three shots and didn't allow a goal. Junior Kali Hartshorn led the way offensively, scoring five goals in the first half while adding an assist and six draw controls. Hartshorn was a perfect two-for-two from free position and had a part in three of Maryland's first goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. Nine different Maryland players scored goals with seniors Jen Giles, Meghan Siverson and Caroline Steele all tallying two. Giles added two assists to get to four points. Graduate student Erica Evans had a goal and two assists to record three points. The Terps led 12-0 at halftime behind Hartshorn's five points and stellar play on the defensive end. Freshman Julia Hoffman recorded the fourth goal of her career in the second half, as Maryland's last of the day. Sophomore Laurie Bracey recorded two groundballs and a caused turnover in the second frame. Junior Victoria L'Insalata and sophomore Brooke Robbins also caused a turnover in the second half. Maryland is now 23-0 all-time in the regular season against Big Ten opponents. The Terps will play their first conference road game this Thursday at No. 19 Penn State. The game will begin at 5:00 p.m. and air on ESPNU.
