NEWTON, Mass.– The No. 1 Boston College lacrosse team took down another ranked opponent as they defeated No. 7 Virginia, 16-9, Saturday afternoon in Newton. The Eagles were led by senior Sam Apuzzo who tallied six goals on the day and assisted on one other to total seven points. Classmate Dempsey Arsenault and junior Cara Urbank both added three goals in the effort while Sheila Rietano and Jordan Lappin each found the back of the net twice. Sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Ngai maintained her hot streak in between the pipes, tallying 10 saves on the day. The Eagles hopped on the board first with two goals from Apuzzo before allowing Virginia to cut the lead in half. The first goal for Virginia would prove to be their only score for the entire first half as the Eagles could not be stopped and put up 10-1 on the board rolling into the halftime break. Apuzzo, Urbank and Lappin each tallied at least two goals in the opening stretch. The Eagle defense remained dominant as well, only allowing four shots on goal in the opening half. Apuzzo welcomed the teams back from the halftime break with a goal just 35 seconds after the opening whistle before Virginia found their feet and answered with a four-goal run – their longest of the game. Apuzzo's fifth of the day snapped it, grabbing a pass from Arsenault. Virginia's Nora Bowen and Sammy Mueller cut the deficit to five before Arsenault answered with two of her own. Avery Shoemaker and Ashlyn McGovern tallied the final two for the Cavaliers but Apuzzo and Rietano each added to prevent the 'Hoos from making a comeback run.
