No. 15/11 Syracuse's defense forced 23 turnovers in the Orange's 15-5 victory against Binghamton in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse did not allow a goal until .5 seconds before halftime. "I was super impressed by our defense today," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "They didn't give up any easy goals. They kept getting the ball back for us. I thought they were the stars of the game today. On offense we were a little sluggish and not quite focused enough to execute the way we can." HOW IT WAS DECIDED For the second consecutive game, Syracuse (2-0) opened the contest with a scoring run, which gave it a commanding lead in the first half. Senior Nicole Levy scored on an assist from junior Emily Hawryschuk at the 27:36 mark to give the Orange an early advantage. It was the first of nine straight goals for Syracuse. The Orange defense limited the Bearcats (0-1) to just four shots in the first half. Binghamton ended Syracuse's scoring run when Lindsay Stephen found the back of the net with .5 seconds left before intermission. Syracuse scored six consecutive goals to start the second half to take its largest lead at 15-1 with 12:21 on the clock. The Bearcats netted the final four goals for the 15-5 final. OF NOTE Syracuse recorded 15 caused turnovers and 32 ground balls. Senior Natalie Wallon posted a career-high three ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers. In addition to the back line, Syracuse's pressure on the ride by the attack and midfield was effective as Binghamton was 12-for-19 in clear attempts. Levy and fellow attacker Megan Carney had four ground balls each. The Orange once again featured a balanced attack as 10 different players scored at least one goal. Levy led the way with three, while Carney and fellow freshmen Meaghan Tyrrell and Sierra Cockerille had two apiece. UP NEXT Syracuse opens ACC play against No. 1 Boston College on Saturday, Feb. 16 at noon in the Carrier Dome. Admission and parking are free.
