On an afternoon that saw seniors Rachel Heidenreich, Ellen Newton, Kayla O'Connell, Jen Reininger, Jourdan Roemer and Rachel Ryan play their final game at the Demske Sports Complex, Canisius (3-14) defeated Binghamton 10-9 in non-conference women's lacrosse action. The Golden Griffins were aided by Newton's career-high 15 saves on 33 shots. The netminder also picked up two ground balls in the win. On the offensive side, Canisius had nine different players find the back of the net led by Reininger, who recorded two tallies in just the first half. The Blue and Gold forced 22 turnovers, highlighted by O'Connell's four caused turnovers. Binghamton (2-14) had two players record three points in the game as Emily Yoo (three goals) and Rachel Golderman (one goal, two assists) paced the Bearcats. Amelia Biancardi and Paige Volkmann found the back of the net twice in the loss. The Bearcats goalie, Taylor Passuello stopped ten shots on the afternoon to record a .500 save percentage. It took nearly 11-minutes for the game's first tally as Ryan found the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season at the 19:48 mark. After Binghamton knotted it at 1-1, Canisius scored four-unanswered to close out the first half. Highlighting the run was Reininger, who scored both of her goals and freshman Skylar McArthur tallied her first collegiate goal. The Bearcats would get themselves back into the contest with a 3-0 run to start the second half and make the score 5-4 with 25:46 left to go. Junior Bryar Cummings once again made it a two-goal game for Canisius as she powered her 22nd goal of the season into the back of the net. Canisius would build its lead up to 10-6, in the second half, following goals from Heidenreich and sophomores Marissa Malvaso and Miranda Malvaso. The Bearcats would score the game's final three goals, but it was too little too late as the Blue and Gold were able to hold on for the win. We got the lead, Binghamton battled back then we were able to stop their run and spark are own and hold on for the win. I think there were a lot of different moments in that game that we've learned from in the past and we used those past experiences to get through those moments to hold on to the lead at the end." Game Notes • Saturday marked the 16th game between Binghamton and Canisius, with the Griffs taking a 14-2 lead in the all-time series. • Canisius has now won seven-straight over the Bearcats. • The nine Canisius goal-scorers was the most in a single game this season. • The Griffs recorded 11 caused turnovers, tied for the second most in a single game this year. • Canisius finishes the regular-season 3-4 at home. • Today was Newton's first career win in the cage. • Emma Mryglod and Katie Smolensky also found the back of the net for the Griffs. • Marissa Malvaso finished the contest with a team-high two helpers. • Heidenreich finished the game with two points. It was the sixth time this season that the Lancaster, N.Y. native recorded multiple points in a game.
