Taking on its second ranked opponent of the season, the Boston University women's lacrosse team hung close with No. 17 USC, but the Trojans came away with a 16-11 decision Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Kailey Conry highlighted the day by dishing out five assists, her last one breaking the program's all-time mark to put atop the leaderboard with 115 career helpers. Conry was spectacular, posting a game-high seven points, while Hannah Kenneally followed with two goals and one assist. Mackenzie Howe was a threat all over the field, notching four draw controls, two goals, and caused a pair of turnovers. Tonianne Magnelli won nine draw controls and Kennady Smith stopped a season-high eight shots over 51 minutes in net. How It Happened USC struck first just three minutes into play before Conry fed Emily Vervlied from behind the net to knot the score at 1-1 with 26:29 left in the half. The Trojans started to pull away, using a 3-0 run over a two-minute span before Bridget McCarthy snapped with ended up being a 4-0 streak, roping in a feed from Kelly Mathews in transition to get the Terriers back on the board. Kenneally dodged a defender before deking the Trojan netminder right in front of the crease to trim the deficit to 6-3 with 8:07 until the break. Makenzie Irvine made it a three-goal game again, 7-4, before the Trojans put the lead back to four with 30 seconds left in the half. Kenneally opened up the second frame with a spectacular backhanded shovel shot. Following a pair of scores by the Trojans, Howe roped in a one-timer from Conry to make it a 10-6 game with 20 minutes to go. Irvine and Conry powered a 2-0 Terrier run, cutting the gap to three at 11-8 with just under 16 minutes left. BU pushed out another 2-0 streak, as Ava Barry lofted a shot past the keeper while falling backwards before Conry found Howe for her record-breaking assist to make it a 12-10 game with 12:44 remaining. USC added a trio of scores before Conry scorched the back of the net one more time. Game Notes Conry's 115th assist put her past Erica Baumgartner '11 for the all-time record.
