Brett Erskine recorded a game-high six points to lead Detroit Mercy to a 13-5 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Friday at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo. Erskine tallied a game-high five goals and added an assist for the Titans (3-2, 3-1 MAAC), who moved into a tie for first place in the league standings with the victory. Luke Majick and Will Edell pitched in a goal and two assists each while three UDM players – Ryan Birney, Matt Blevins and AJ Van Voorhis – all finished with a goal and an assist each. Logan Shamblin made 14 saves in goal for the Titans. Junior Mike Penna tallied two goals for the Golden Griffins (2-2, 1-2 MAAC). Graduate Dan Kritkausky, sophomore Jackson Naylor and freshman Keegan Kozack accounted for the other three Canisius goals. Sophomore Otto Bergmann recorded 12 saves in goal for the Griffs. UDM never trailed in the contest, as Erskine tallied two goals and added an assist to highlight a 5-0 run that spanned the opening 10:13 of the contest and propelled the Titans to a 5-1 advantage after the first quarter. The teams traded goals during the second quarter before Majick completed the first-half scoring with his fifth of the season to make it an 7-2 game at the break. Erskine completed his hat trick just 20 seconds into the third quarter to ignite another Titans run, this time a 6-1 stretch that lasted into the early stages of the fourth quarter and gave UDM its largest lead of the game, 13-3. Penna and Kritkausky closed out the scoring with a pair of goals in the last five minutes of regulation to determine the final eight-goal margin. Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments "Mentally, we were not prepared to play today. We came out flat. We had three failed clears that led to three goals out of their first four off the bat and that's unacceptable. We work on that every single day. It's an area we know we've struggled in, and for some reason we have gotten cold feet in the beginning of games and we can't do that. It put us in a hole right off the bat and then it snowballed from there. "We got to be a better practice team. That's as simple as it gets. Obviously, we're not good enough to just show up on game day. So, what has to happen is, we've got to practice harder and we've got to hold ourselves to a higher standard. Guys have got to get in here and hit the wall and put in more work if it's an area that they're deficient, with their stick work or X's and O's aspects. We've got to continue to work at it, and then not make any excuses. "It goes back to practicing harder holding ourselves to a higher standard. And that goes from the first guy on the team all the way to the 48th guy on the team. We've got to have a more consistent effort every single day. There's a lot that's out of our control at times with class and other things, but everybody in the country is dealing with that and we've got to find a way to break through those mental and physical barriers that are inhibiting us on game day." Game Notes • Friday's contest served as the 13th meeting between the two Jesuit schools. The Titans regained the lead in the series, 7-6, with Friday's victory, recording just their second win in the last six meetings between the two programs. • Detroit Mercy out-shot Canisius, 40-29, for the contest, highlighted by a 24-17 edge in the second half. • Canisius was 2-for-4 in man-up situations while Detroit Mercy was 0-for-3. • The Griffs were 15-of-24 in clearing attempts while Detroit Mercy was 20-of-26 for the contest. • Bergmann recorded double-digit saves in a game for the third time this season and the eight time in his career with his 12-save effort on Friday. • Penna tallied multiple goals in a game for the first time this season and the third time in his career.
