The Brown women's lacrosse team was edged by Yale, 19-17, in Ivy League play on Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. The loss moves the Bears to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in conference action while Yale improves to 6-1 on the year and 2-0 in the Ivy League. After a 9-9 tie, Yale concluded the first half on a 3-1 run to take a 12-10 advantage into the break. The Bulldogs would not surrender a lead in the second, and fought off two pushes from the Bears that closed the game late within one score. Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) led the Bears offensively with five goals, her seventh-straight game with at least three scores. Junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) also added four goals and one assist. Yale opened with a 2-0 lead with scores from Barrett Carlson (28:37) and Kayla Duperrouzel (27:12). Brown responded with four unanswered tallies to claim a 4-2 advantage. Senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) started the run for the Bears at 24:58 while Moinuddin (23:48), freshman Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) (23:07) and junior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (22:14) followed. The Bulldogs and the Bears traded goals at 21:46 and 20:47 with Mosenthal registering Brown's score at the 20-minute mark on a free-position shot to bring the Bears' lead to 5-3. Yale next scored five straight to take an 8-5 advantage with the final two coming from Sam Higgins at 16:29 and 15:07. Brown regained a one-goal lead (9-8) when it went on a four-goal run starting with Mosenthal's second of the day at 13:17 and ending with two from sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) (10:30, 9:02). The Bulldogs tied it at nine with a goal from Olivia Markert at 6:02 and then proceeded to score three-straight for a 12-9 lead at 3:10. Moinuddin added her second of the period with one second remaining to pull the Bears within two (12-10) at the break. Yale held onto the shot lead for the first at 20-10 and was aided by 16 draw control wins compared to Brown's six. The Bears were a perfect 2-for-2 on free position tallies while the Bulldogs were 3-for-5. Yale upped its lead to four with two goals by Emily Granger to open the second (29:15, 28:22). Mosenthal tallied a hat trick at 25:52 and DeGennaro put in her second at 25:21 to pull the Bears within two (14-12). The two teams would trade goals three times to bring the score to 17-15 with 5:15 remaining on Fowler's free-position score. Moinuddin added a man-up tally at 4:27 to bring the Bears within one, 17-16. Izzy Nixon gave Yale some breathing room and a two goal lead at 3:51 but Moinuddin again brought Brown within one (18-17) at 2:44 with her fourth score. The Bears forced a turnover following the draw control and Moinuddin had a shot on net but Sydney Marks came up with the save and gave the Bulldogs possession. Higgins secured the game for Yale with her goal with 35 second left. The Bulldogs next won the draw control and ran out the clock. Shots were even for the second stanza at 15 with Yale holding a 35-31 edge overall. The Bulldogs again led in draw controls, 11-4, and were 27-10 on the day. Yale converted three free-position shots in five attempts in the frame while Brown was 1-for-4. In goal, sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) had seven saves for the Bears in the start while senior Mikaela Karlsson (Framingham, Mass.) made two stops in relief. Sydeny Marks turned away seven shots on the other end. Nixon paced Yale in scoring with five goals while Higgins and Granger each added four goals and two assists. The Bears have a quick turnaround and will host Iona tomorrow, Sunday, March 18, in a non-conference game at Stevenson-Pincince starting at 2:00 p.m. on the Ivy League Network and NESNplus.
