Junior Mathieu Boissonneault scored four goals and senior Brad Nordstrom recorded a season-high 16 saves to lead Canisius to an 8-6 victory over No. 19 Colgate in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex. Boissonneault added an assist to finish with a game-high five points for the Golden Griffins (4-3), who picked up their first victory in 15 tries against the Raiders (3-3). Senior Mario Caito tallied three goals and freshman Isaiah Ricketts accounted for the eighth Canisius tally while fellow freshman Jacob Buck dished out a game-best four assists. Nordstrom, meanwhile, turned in another dominant performance between the pipes for the Griffs, making 13 of his 16 saves during the final three quarters as he and the Canisius defense combined to limit Colgate to just three goals in that timeframe. Six players – Matt Donovan, Mike Hawkins, Nicky Petkevich, Ducan Hoskinson, James Caddigan and Brian Mincius – tallied one goal each for the Raiders. Trailing 4-2 late in the second quarter, Canisius used goals from Caito and Ricketts in the final 1:53 of the frame to send the teams to the locker room tied at 4-4. The Griffs carried the momentum from the end of the second quarter into the third, using goals from Boissonneault and Caito to open the frame and cap a four-goal outburst that gave them a 6-4 cushion. Petkevich pulled the Raiders within one during the later stages of the third, but Boissonneault restored Canisius' two-goal cushion with two seconds remaining in the stanza as he beat Colgate goalie Connor Mullins with a shot just before the horn to make it a 7-5 contest. Boissonneault opened the fourth-quarter scoring with his foruth of the afternoon just 62 seconds into the final frame to give the Griffs their largest lead of the game, 8-5. Donovan trimmed the Canisius cushion to two midways through the fourth, but that would be as close as the Raiders would get as the Griffs held on to complete the upset. Earlier in the contest, Caito staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the game, only to see Hawkins answer for Colgate less than two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. The Griffs regained the lead just 62 later thanks to Boissonneault, but the Raiders responded with three unanswered goals during a nearly 17-minute stretch to grab a 4-2 lead and set the stage for the Canisius comeback. Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments "Colgate has been a great team this season and it shows by the way they come out and play. They're a tough matchup. Our guys accepted the challenge of taking on a ranked opponent and focusing in on the game plan this week throughout practice and working to be more consistent to follow up a really good game last week. I'm excited for the guys in the locker room. It wasn't always pretty today, but they banded together today to help us get the win. "The fact that we were able to capitalize on what ended up being some limited opportunities was great, more so because we had some self-inflicted errors where we need to clean up some things so that we can have some more possessions. But, the guys that got stuck on defense, whether they were more of an offensive-minded player or not, just dug in their heels and stepped up to the task of playing some good solid defense when called upon and the guys at the back end really stuck together and formed a great unit today. "There was a lot of discipline and attention to detail regarding the game plan on the defensive end today; knowing our opponent and the matchups of their personnel and some of their tendencies. The guys have really done a good job of spending more time diving into film and being students of the game. That's helping them as individuals and as a unit, as all of these different faces coming together for the first time are starting to gel. Brad (Nordstrom) has been great back there, but the guys in front of him today were absolutely tremendous, which made his job a little bit easier. It was a solid effort from the entire unit."
