NEW HAVEN, Conn. (3/26/2017) -- University of Detroit Mercy junior Charlie Hayes tallied a career-high five caused turnovers and senior Jason Weber made 13 saves as the Titan defense stifled defending MAAC champions Quinnipiac all game long in an 8-6 victory on the road on Sunday. The win moved Detroit Mercy to 4-6 on the season and 2-0 in the MAAC, the first 2-0 start for the red, white and blue since 2012. With his 13 saves, Weber became the all-time leader at Detroit Mercy as he now has 622 in his career, passing the 609 mark set byA.J. Levell (2010-13). It was also his 39th career game in double-figure saves in 47 career contests. Hayes' five caused turnovers were part of a season-high 13 for the Titans, the most since posting 13 against Manhattan in 2015. The five caused turnovers were just two away from the school record and he also tied his career high picking up a game-best five ground balls. Senior Kyle Beauregard, junior Adam Susalla and sophomore Matthew Vangalen each had two goals apiece, while Hayes and freshman Seth Mendell found the back of the net. It was a scoreless contest until the 5:04 mark of the first when junior Sean Birney found Beauregard and he beat the keeper to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. Quinnipiac (1-6, 0-2 MAAC) came back with a little over two minutes left and tied the game up and then took a 2-1 lead early in the second. With the Titan defense keeping the Bobcats at bay, Detroit Mercy took control with six-straight goals. Junior Lucas Ducharme found Susalla and he fired one in to tie it at 2-2 with 10:21 left in the second. Vangalen then gave the Titans the lead for good showing off his skills as he picked up a ground ball off a save and from behind his back, unleashed a shot that surprised the QU goalie to make it a 3-2 contest with 6:44 to go in the period. Strong defense then led to offense as Hayes forced a turnover and in transition came up with a goal and Detroit Mercy led 4-2 at the break. The third quarter started off just like the first with both teams scoreless for a good part until Birney fed Beauregard again and he finished it off for a 5-2 advantage with 8:21 left. The Titans would later extend it to 7-2 on goals from Vangalen and Mendell. Quinnipiac ended that run in the fourth, but Susalla got it back with an unassisted marker for his career-high second of the game and an 8-3 lead with 6:52 remaining. The Titans were all over the field on the day leading Quinnipiac in ground balls (41-27) and caused turnovers (13-7). The 41 ground balls were a season high and the most by Detroit Mercy since 2012. Freshman Alex Jarzembowski was 8-of-13 on faceoffs with four ground balls. Junior defenseman Will Kane finished with two caused turnovers and three ground balls and freshman Alex Akins had a caused turnover and two GB's. Akins was also the primary defender on Quinnipiac's leading goal scorer Brian Feldman – who came into the game with 21 goals and 23 points – holding him to just one goal, while Hayes held the Bobcats' second-leading goal scorer Foster Cuomo – the Co-MAAC Preseason Player of the Year - off the stat sheet.
