NEWARK, Del. – The 8-seed UAlbany men's lacrosse team saw its great season come to close on Sunday afternoon in Delaware after an 18-9 defeat vs. 1-seed Maryland in the NCAA Quarterfinal round. UAlbany (15-3) recovered from an early two-goal deficit against Maryland (14-3), but was victim to a proceeding 8-0 run. UAlbany could not get closer and fell in front of 9,711 at Delaware Stadium. “It was a special year for us, starting in September all the way through today,” said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr. “Unfortunately, today just wasn't our day, we were just missing something, but a lot of that had to do with Maryland, they are a very good team.” This ends the career of the eight-member UAlbany senior class, the winningest class in program history. The class combined for three America East Tournament titles, four NCAA Tournament appearances, three NCAA quarterfinal appearances, the program's first-ever at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament and a combined 55-16 record. “I've talked all year about my seniors,” said Marr. “We had one bad practice the entire year. That comes from senior leadership. They had our guys prepared for practice every day, prepared for every game that we played. Their enthusiasm, their positive attitude. I cannot say enough about how good they were. For a class that maybe did not have a [superstar] name. With Connor [Fields] being a year behind them, they were an in-between class. Sometimes the classes without a superstar are your best classes, and it's a collective superstar. And that's what they gave us this year. They were very powerful in how they motivated the team every week.” This year, UAlbany returned to the top of the America East mountain, defeating Binghamton 20-8 in the conference title game. UAlbany earned the right to host an NCAA Tournament First Round game in 10 years, knocking off defending national champion North Carolina 15-12. Six different players scored goals for UAlbany, led by Connor Fields, who had three goals and one assist. Fields finished the year with 117 points, fourth all-time in NCAA single season points. He stands only behind UAlbany greats Lyle Thompson (128 in 2014, 121 in 2015) and Miles Thompson (119 in 2014). Adam Osika scored on both of his shots on the cage. TD Ierlan won 14-of-30 faceoffs with eight ground balls. JD Colarusso got the loss in goal with five saves and 13 goals allowed in 28:56, while Nate Siekierski had five saves and five allowed in 31:04 of play. For Maryland, Matt Rambo had eight points off four goals and four assists, while Connor Kelly netted five goals. Dan Morris picked up the victory in goal with 10 saves and nine goals allowed in the opening 56:58. Maryland scored the first two goals after stopping UAlbany on offense, with Rambo scoring on a turnaround shot and Bryce Young hitting a shot in transition. UAlbany got those goals back quickly with a charge to the cage and score from Osika and then Fields hitting a narrow shot close range inside the right post to make it 2-2 five minutes in. Maryland hit another transition goal from a defender, then after a won faceoff, Rambo scored a second off a spin move. Maryland got the next possession and scored again with Rambo heading to the cage. UAlbany held off a couple more Maryland possessions in the quarter, but the Terrapins added another goal on a Tim Rotanz bounce shot. Maryland led 6-2 after one. A straight away goal from Kelly minutes into the second quarter continued the run for Maryland. Maryland added to the run with three more goals, one in transition, one off a ground ball out of a scrum and a third on a long range fire from Rotanz, making it 10-2 Maryland. Coach Marr called a timeout while UAlbany was on offense; the Great Danes responded with Fields rushing to the cage and scoring while pushed into the crease. After Maryland scored two more goals, Fields got one back just before the end of the half, firing from a three-quarters motion and scoring low. UAlbany trailed 12-4 at the break. Maryland scored the first two goals in the third quarter to build the lead up to 10. On a second chance, Sean Eccles got the pass from Fields in front of the net for the shot and score. Despite a couple of saves from UAlbany keepers, Maryland added another trio of goals, leading 17-5 after three. UAlbany struck first in the opening of the fourth as Troy Reh buried his high shot in transition from Kyle McClancy. After Maryland got the goal back, Jack Burgmaster scored quickly off the faceoff, then John Glancy nailed a laser on the run in the top corner. UAlbany's defense held on Maryland's long possessions the rest of the way, adding a transition goal as Osika scored close range from Connor Filipowski. But UAlbany could not bridge the gap and fell 18-9. In earlier action, Towson defeated 2-seed Syracuse 10-7 in Newark. Maryland will play 5-seed Denver in the semifinal round in Boston while Towson takes on 3-seed Ohio State.
