The No. 11 ranked Bulldogs overcame a 3-goal, third-quarter deficit to register a 15-11 win over a tough Michigan team before a full Reese Stadium today in Yale's home opener. Nine different Elis got in on the scoring, but a few stood out with big days. Jack Tigh had a career-high 5 goals and 1 assist, Jackson Morrill hit the net 4 times and Ben Reeves chipped in a pair of goals with 4 assists. It's tough to score when you don't have the ball, and senior Conor Mackie made sure Yale had enough chances to outshoot the Wolverines. Mackie won 6 of 7 in the first and finished with 21 wins on 30 face-offs. His 13 ground balls helped the home team have a 38-22 advantage overall. Things were going well early for the Blue. Reeves, the two-time All-American, ran out from the corner and scored to end the first quarter at 4-2 Yale. The lead became three before Michigan scored 4 straight and took the first of its two leads. Morrill ended the UM streak by converting a pass from Lucas Cotler at 5:21 of the second to even things at 6-6. The Wolverines (2-2) hit the net twice before the half and took an 8-6 lead into the third quarter. That advantage got to 3 goals, but that was not going to last. The Blue scored 9 of the last 11 goals to even its record at 1-1. "We got some stops when we needed them," said Yale head coach Andy Shay. "The guys settled in and played a little more unselfishly. We are still a work in progress." The last lead Michigan saw was erased when Morrill, who also had a career-high 6 points, netted his fourth of the day with 1:10 left in the third pulling even at 10-10. Freshman Will Cabrera notched his first collegiate goal from 15 feet out with 33 seconds left in the third, and the packed house at Reese Stadium could feel the complete momentum shift with an 11-10 lead. Tigh went to his left to make it a two-goal lead and then Matt Gaudett converted the most interesting tally of the day. The sophomore attackman took a low feed from Reeves and had the ball knocked out of his stick in traffic. Gaudett found it quickly and smacked it past the UM goalie. The Yale coach was impressed with Tigh's performance, but it did not seem to surprise him at all. "He's been great and has blossomed into a positive leader who knows what's expected of him. He lets the game come to him," said Shay. Shay also had to be pleased with what he saw from the young Bulldogs. Many Yale rookies contributed to the victory, including goalie Jack Starr getting his first win with 5 saves.
