No. 8/7 Syracuse once again jumped out to a big lead in the first half and defeated Coastal Carolina, 18-5, in the Carrier Dome. Twelve different players scored at least one goal for the Orange as they equaled their highest output of the season. "It was a quick turnaround – one day to prepare after a tough (Boston College) game," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "We came out and I thought we played pretty well – a little sluggish the first minute or two – but then we turned it around and got on a roll. I thought our ride was very successful and our shooting came around and our defense played outstanding." HOW IT HAPPENED After Syracuse (3-1) came up empty in its first two possessions, Coastal Carolina (1-1) scored the first goal of the game at the 25:16 mark. It was all Orange after that. Freshman Meaghan Tyrrell scored an unassisted goal less than a minute later, sparking Syracuse on a 9-0 scoring run. Tyrrell had all three of her goals during the offensive outburst, while freshman Megan Carney had two goals. Haley Alexander briefly halted the run with her sixth goal of the season, but the Orange scored the final four goals of the half to take a 13-2 lead into the locker room at halftime. Syracuse led by as many as 14 in the second half before Coastal Carolina netted three of the game's final four goals for the 18-5 final. OF NOTE Syracuse's 18 goals against the Chanticleers matched its total against Connecticut in the season opener. The Orange are averaging 15.75 goals per game this season. Tyrrell recorded her first career hat trick, while redshirt junior Morgan Alexander posted her second three-goal performance of the season. Carney and sophomore Sam Swart finished with two goals each, while junior Emily Hawryschuk tied her career high with two assists. Syracuse held the advantage in every statistical category. The Orange outshot the Chanticleers, 33-11, picked up 26 ground balls to 17 for Coastal Carolina, and held an 18-7 advantage in draws. UP NEXT Syracuse will face another top five team when it hosts No. 4/5 Northwestern on Sunday, Feb. 24 at noon. Admission and parking are free.
