The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team opened year eight of varsity competition with a 10-8 victory over Cleveland State on Saturday (Feb. 9) at CSU's Krenzler Dome. Michigan (1-0) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead keyed by a hat-trick from sophomore Alex Buckanavage, and held Cleveland State scoreless until the 4:56 mark of the second quarter. Leading 7-3 at the half and dominating the shot category, 29-9, the Vikings (0-2) scored the first three goals of the second half to trim the Wolverine advantage to 7-6 with 7:42 to go in the third quarter. Senior Brent Noseworthy's first goal of the day at 6:21 of the third put an end to the U-M scoring drought that lasted nearly 15 minutes of game action, and brought the score to 8-6 in favor of the Wolverines. The two sides then traded goals as the score sat at 9-7 after three quarters of action. The Maize and Blue opened the fourth on a man-up chance, but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Both sides were then held scoreless until 7:15 of the fourth quarter until CSU's Michael Wilson trimmed the score to 9-8. Noseworthy added his second goal at the 1:56 mark of the fourth on a feed from Buckanavage off a pick to bring the score to its final resting place of 10-8. Buckanavage led U-M with five points (three goals, two assists), while classmate Kevin Mack had two goals and an assist. Senior longpole Nick DeCaprio aided the defensive effort with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Senior Peter Hollen, junior Austin Robinson and freshmen Andrew Darby and Zach Johnson all made their U-M debuts. Johnson had a team-high four ground balls, while Robinson had a ground ball as well.
