The Mercer men's lacrosse team went scoreless in a critical second quarter as it fell to visiting Cleveland State, 12-8, at Five Star Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Mercer (0-4) dropped its fourth match of the season despite a six-goal second half. Cleveland State earned its second win of the year, improving to 2-4. How It Happened The Bears owned a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter after an extra-man goal by Sean Goldsmith – who netted a hat trick – and Michael Quinn's fourth goal of the season. Nick Rockefeller and Mikey Ewing added assists on the Bears' two first-quarter goals. Cleveland State rallied over the next 20 minutes, outscoring Mercer, 5-0, in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead into the intermission. Mercer was unable to recover from the Vikings' run despite notching three goals in each of the third and fourth quarters. Goals by Quinn and Mikey Ewing opened the second half and cut Cleveland State's lead to 6-4, but the Vikings responded with a pair of their own. Goals by Goldsmith, Nick Rockefeller and Patrick Marks in the fourth quarter were not enough to spark a late rally.
