PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's lacrosse team put up one of the best offensive performances it ever has against James Madison on Friday night at Vidas Field, but it was not enough as the Dragons fell to the No. 11 Dukes, 19-9. Drexel came within one goal of its high-water mark in the series with James Madison. Colleen Grady, whose pointless game in last season's meeting with the Dukes remains the only game of her career without a goal or point, made her presence known with a four-goal, five-point game in the loss. Courtney Dietzel had a pair of goals and Claire Jarema became the ninth Dragon this year to reach the 10-point mark with a goal and an assist. Karson Harris had a goal and five draw controls, leaving her two shy of Emily Hoesch's program record of 73 in the 2005 season. Caroline Cummings also scored a goal, with Maggie Stetson contributing an assist. Grady and Harris gave the Dragons early leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but James Madison pulled in front with six straight goals to make it a 7-2 game. The Dukes' run came in the span of just 4:08, and after Grady fed Cummings to make it a 7-3 game with 16:56 to play, JMU scored four more in a row to build an 11-3 lead. As the first half wound down, the Dragons began to claw their way back into the game. Dietzel scored off a pass from Jarema with 6:45 to play, and after the Dukes responded, Grady netted her second of the day to make it 12-5. JMU again had an answer, but Jarema closed the half with a goal that made it a 13-6 game at the break. Drexel also opened the second half with a goal, as Stetson fed Grady, pulling the Dragons back within six at 13-7. That would be as close as it would get, however, as James Madison again went on an extended run, scoring five straight before Grady and Dietzel provided the final two Drexel goals of the night. Drexel's nine goals are one shy of the program high against James Madison when the Dragons scored 10 in a loss on March 31, 2006. The Dragons have scored nine goals on six occasions against JMU, most recently April 5, 2015. The Dragons will enjoy a bye over the weekend, and will return to action next Friday when they host Delaware at 6 p.m.
