Diana DeVita's career-high five points led a balanced scoring effort for Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse, and the defense forced 24 turnovers as the Stags topped visiting UConn, 13-7, on Wednesday afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Olivia Conquest made 13 saves in the cage to preserve the victory. With the win, Fairfield begins a season at 2-0 for the first time since 2012. The Stags also snap a seven-game losing streak to their in-state foe. Fairfield last upended UConn in the 2009 season. "We've had a tough stretch against UConn since Coach Woods took over their program," said Field. "And especially for our upperclassmen that have been on the other end of a few close games with them, this is a big win." DeVita, who scored four goals in last season's 13-12 loss to the Huskies in Storrs, netted a hat trick and distributed a pair of assists to account for her five points today. Meaghan Graham added a hat trick of her own, while Kathleen Hulseman and Jillian Winwood also had three-point days with two goals and one assist apiece. Rounding out the scoring were Kelly Horning with two goals, Brooke Gallagher with one tally and Kelly Gordon with an assist for the second consecutive outing. In addition to her multi-goal outing, Horning was a force in the defensive midfield with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. DeVita picked up four ground balls with Hulseman and Megan Beach each collecting three. Erin Mammele and Caroline Mangan each corralled four draw controls as the Stags were edged on the restart, 12-10. Defensively, Fairfield held UConn to its lowest scoring total in the series since a 6-4 loss to the Huskies in 2015. In addition to Conquest's 13 saves in the cage, starting defenders Beach, Mammele, Mangan and Maggie Reynolds each caused a pair of turnovers. The Stags pressured UConn in 24 giveaways in all, with Keyla Bay, Reagan Bossolina and Hailey Durkin also contributing to Fairfield's stifling defense. After UConn started the scoring, Fairfield jumped out to a 4-1 lead with goals from Horning, Graham, Winwood and DeVita. The Huskies would end the run on Sydney Watson's second marker of the day, but the Stags' cushion then grew to 7-2 with 12:35 remaining in the half on tallies by DeVita, Winwood and Gallagher. UConn netted the final two goals of the half to run the intermission score to 7-4 in favor of the Stags. The Huskies continued their run after the break, scoring two more to trim the deficit to a single tally at 7-6 with 14:56 to play. At that point, the next goal went to Graham to end the drought and start Fairfield on a 4-0 run that also featured back-to-back free-position goals by Hulseman in a span of just 30 seconds. In total, the Stags went scoreless for a stretch of 31:39 of clock time. "The message (during the scoring drought) was just to keep calm and stay with the game plan, and the scoring will come," said Field. "Obviously, we don't want these lulls to become common over the course of the season, but I think it's important to know that we can work through them and keep chipping away if they do happen." The Stags capped the effort with late goals from Horning and DeVita to round out the 13-7 final tally. Seven different players recorded points in the contest after six did so in Saturday's season-opening win at Holy Cross. "This was a true team win. I'm glad to see diversity in our scoring, and a lot of credit for this win also goes to players who weren't even playing today," Field noted. "We prepped really well and practiced hard to get ready for today. I know everybody wants to get those minutes on gameday, but they really did help us get this win." UConn (0-2) was led by a hat trick for Olivia Miles and two goals from Watson. Annie Carroll made 11 saves for the Huskies. The Stags resume the non-conference slate next Wednesday, Feb. 20 with a 3 p.m. clash at Columbia. Action returns to Rafferty Stadium next Saturday, Feb. 23, when Hofstra comes to town for a 1 p.m. tilt.
