thanked all the players who played for her and all of the coaches who coached with her. She thanked Princeton University. She thanked the alums who come back to support the current team and the current players who keep her going. She even thanked the two reporters for covering her team. She thanked everyone and took credit for almost nothing, all as she beamed a smile that said that even she would have to admit that she had just done something very special. Tess D'Orsi scored six goals and Sam Fish made 11 saves to lead Princeton to a 16-7 win over Temple in the season-opener for the Tigers. Senior Elizabeth George had two goals and two assists to reach 100 career points. But this day belonged to the Hall of Fame coach. The victory was the 400th for Sailer, who became the first lacrosse coach - women's or men's - ever to win 400 games at one Division I school. Sailer is the second women's Division I coach to 400 wins (along with Navy coach Cindy Timchal, who also coached at Northwestern and Maryland), as well as the fifth women's college coach to get there, along with three Division III coaches (including The College of New Jersey's Sharon Pfluger, the all-time leader with 514). John Danowski, the current Duke coach who also coached at Hofstra, is the only men's coach to reach 400 wins in Division I. "This is a place I truly love," Sailer said. "This team has been my family and my baby. I've had amazing student-athletes and coaches here. It's been a lot of hard work, a lot of great players, a lot of big wins. I'm really happy to get it with this group. This is a very fun team." Sailer, a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame, is now 400-158 in her 33 seasons at Princeton. She has won three NCAA championships - in 1994, 2002 and 2003 - and she has coached Princeton to 14 Ivy League championships and 25 NCAA appearances. As the final seconds of the win over Temple ticked down, Sailer saw herself in the crowd, as her alums and the parents of the current players held up Chris Sailer faces on sticks. Her team also broke out "400 Wins" t shirts after the game. "I feel a lot of love," said Sailer. "It's a very special moment. I'm one of a staff of coaches. The kids go out and fight every day. I've been fortunate to coach at a great institution like this. I try not to reflect on the personal piece. I'm just grateful to be a coach at Princeton. But yes. It's a very nice milestone." The outcome was never really in doubt after the Tigers got goals from D'Orsi, Hallett and George in the first five minutes to build a 3-0 lead. It would be 10-2 at halftime and no closer than seven after the break. George, the All-America, scored her second goal of the day to go along with her two assists with 15 minutes to go, leaving her with 82 career goals, 18 career assists and 100 career points. "It's fun to get it in the first game of my senior year, and it's really special to get there as part of my coach's 400th win," George said. "It's so cool to be part of that and to play for a legend. As soon as you sit down with her on a recruiting trip, you see what kind of a person she is. She cares so much about us as students and as people and not just as athletes. We are very excited that she got to 400." Princeton's Nonie Anderson had a ridiculous day, with four caused turnovers, three ground balls and even a goal in transition. Alex Argo also had four caused turnovers. Veterans Kyla Sears and Allie Rogers both had a goal, and the Tigers got three points from the freshman class with a goal by Lucie Gildehaus and assists from Maria Pansis and Shannon Berry. Princeton outshot Temple 30-22. George had six draw controls while Hallett had five. The Tigers are on the road next Saturday when they travel to Charlottesville to take on Virginia.
