The Hampton University lacrosse team defeated the Pride of Greensboro College 14-6 in their home opener on Saturday. Lonnie Jones led the Pirates in scoring with four, while Pierce Johnson, Kendall Sapp and Elliott Johnson, III added two scores of their own. Nathan Brungot, Derian Williams-Sturdivant, Jordan Brown and Ian Groom all added one goal each. The Pirates drew first blood as they took a 3-0 lead on an unassisted score from Jones with 8:10 left in the first period. The Pride would answer back with two straight goals making it 3-2 with 3:40 left in the opening period. With an assist from Pierce Johnson, Brown would score and with an unassisted score from Elliott Johnson, III, Hampton pushed their led to 5-2 to close out the first period. Greensboro was able to put two scores on the board in the second period. Hampton would respond and maintain their lead, by scoring three goals, from Jones, Pierce Johnson and Brungot as the Pirates extended their lead to 8-4 going into the half. Jones would score his third on the day to give the Pirates a 9-4 advantage over the Pride. Greensboro responded back with a score of their own to make it 9-5. Hampton would respond as, Elliott Johnson III scored off an assist from Brungot with 3:47 left, while Jones tallied his fourth goal to closed out the third period with an 11-5 lead. In the fourth, Hampton got goals from Sapp, Williams-Sturdivant and an unassisted goal from Groom with 34 seconds left to close the scoring and the win. The Pirates will host SUNY Maritime on Friday March 8 at 2pm.
