(U-M Lacrosse Stadium) Score: #12 Michigan 12, #19 Penn State 9 Records: U-M (10-0, 1-0 B1G), No. 19 Penn State (4-4, 0-1 B1G) Next U-M Event: Thursday, March 21 -- at Ohio State (Columbus, Ohio), 7 p.m. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team took down its fifth ranked opponent of the season and earned its 10th victory of the season with a 12-9 win over No. 19 Penn State at U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday (March 16) afternoon. The victory ran the Wolverines' record to 10-0 – the first double-digit win season in program history -- and extended its win streak to 12 games, going back to the end of last year. The Wolverines took a five-goal advantage in the first half before Penn State roared back in the second to come within one at 9-8. Michigan used a 3-1 run and a goalie change to turn the tide. Sophomore Caitlin Muir led U-M offensively with two goals and three assists, while senior Adriana Pendino notched her fifth hat trick of the season and tallied one assist. Nadine Stewart also added two goals to the Michigan tally, while eight Wolverines in all found the back of the cage. Seniors Casey Cummo and Madison Richardson led the Wolverines defensively with three and two caused turnovers, respectively, while Erin Garvey had five ground balls. In goal, Mira Shane made seven saves in the first half, while Alli Kothari came in for 21:06 to make six key saves in the second half. The two teams exchanged goals to start the first half before Pendino scored back-to-back goals to give Michigan a 4-2 lead with under 15 minutes to play in the first half. Penn State tried to work its way back into the game as it peppered the net, but Shane came up big for the Maize and Blue making three straight saves to keep the Nittany Lion goal total at two. Michigan added three unanswered goals in the first half, including Katherine Granito's second goal of the season, to take a 7-2 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Michigan outshot Penn State, 22-5, in the opening frame. Pendino's two goals led the way for U-M in the first half while Shane made seven saves for the Wolverines. Penn State came out strong in the second frame, going on a 5-1 run to come within one of the Wolverines, 8-7, with 21:06 to play. Michigan Head coach Hannah Nielsen opted to make a goalie change and Kothari replaced Shane for the remainder of the contest. Following the switch, the teams exchanged back-to-back goals before Michigan scored two more unanswered goals to take an 11-8 advantage with 11:13 left. The Wolverines will continue with Big Ten Conference play when they head to Columbus, Ohio, for a Thursday-night (March 21) matchup with Ohio State. First draw is set for 7 p.m.
