Jamie Ortega's six goals and two assists led second-ranked North Carolina to a 13-9 win in women's lacrosse over High Point on Friday evening at Kenan Stadium. Carolina scored the game's final three goals. Ortega tied her career high with eight points. Her six goals were one off her career high of seven last year versus Duke. With the victory, Carolina improved to 2-0 this season. High Point fell to 1-1. The Tar Heels also got a goal and three assists from both Katie Hoeg and Olivia Ferrucci, as well as two goals from Tayler Warehime. Kara Klages and Elizabeth Hillman each scored single goals. Abby Hormes scored three goals for HPU, and Ashley Britton added two. "We hustled, we worked hard, but we didn't execute very well," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "We were sloppy and I felt we were a day late and a dollar short on a lot of things offensively. Some of that is how High Point plays defense and getting in shooting lanes, so I credit them for sure. "It wasn't lack of effort tonight," Levy continued. "It's just locking in, communicating, executing and putting the ball away. In the first half, I thought we had a lot of open looks at the cage that we just didn't convert, and you can't do that." Taylor Moreno started in goal for Carolina and went the distance, making nine saves. For High Point, Sarah Zeto made 10 saves in 60 minutes of action. The two teams were tied at 5-5 at halftime despite Ortega's two goals and three assists in the opening 30 minutes. After the break, the Tar Heels scored the first three goals to break the tie and take a three-goal lead, but the Panthers responded with three consecutive goals of their own to tie it at 8-8 with 16:23 to go in the game. Ortega replied with a goal 18 seconds later, and McDaniels' free position goal made it 10-8 with 15:37 left. HPU made it 10-9 with 11:44 to go, but three more UNC goals in a row clinched the win. The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday when they host ECU at noon in Kenan Stadium.
