Stony Brook, N,Y. – Host Stony Brook (4-4, 1-1 America East) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held off a second-half UMBC (1-6, 0-2 AE) rally to prevail, 14-7, over the Retrievers in chilly, windy conditions at LaValle Stadium. UMBC junior attackman Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) led the Retrievers with three goals, registering his game with three of more this season. The Retrievers entered the game with 43 first half goals in their first six games, but could not create many high quality opportunities in the first 30 minutes. They drew three Seawolf fouls, but managed just two shots attempted and committed a turnover in 2:00 of penalty time. Stony Brook scored three times in the first quarter and added a pair of the second and took a 5-0 lead into the locker room. The hosts extended the lead to 7-0 before McIntyre broke the ice for UMBC at the 7:27 mark of the third quarter. He converted a feed from freshman midfielder Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's), who was making his first career start and recorded his first collegiate point. McIntyre scored an unassisted goal 82 seconds later and played a role as junior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) cut the deficit to 7-3 with 1:21 to play in the third. McIntyre's shot was saved, but Frawley gathered and flicked the rebound into the cage to give the visitors life after 45 minutes. But Stony Brook scored twice in the first 68 seconds of the fourth quarter and UMBC could not get within five goals of the Seawolves the rest of the way. Sophomore attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) contributed a career-best three assists, while Frawley tallied twice to push his team lead in goals to 17. Stony Brook produced small edges in shots (36-30) and face-offs (14-11). UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made seven saves for UMBC, while SBU netminder Michael Bollinger stopped 10 Retriever shots. Stony Brook's Tom Haun led his side with four goals. UMBC plays its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday, March 30 when they host Lafayette. Game time is slated for noon at UMBC Stadium.
