In what seemed like a relatively quiet contest in the opening quarters, the no. 1 Adelphi University men's lacrosse team outscored Molloy College 9-4 in the second half en route to a 14-6 victory Wednesday evening on Motamed Field. Behind four tallies from Ian Kirby, who also added three helpers to finish with seven points, the top-ranked Panthers (5-0) picked up their fifth straight win in a chilly non-conference tilt. Gordon Purdie, Jr. and Nicolas Racalbuto each added two goals of their own as six other players picked up solo shots to contribute to the win. Defensively, Jack Thomann picked up three caused turnovers and scooped four ground balls as Brendan McDougal earned another win between the pipes for the home team. An extended amount of time went by before either team got on the board as Purdie, Jr. struck first with 3:02 left in the opening quarter. The Lions (1-4) did not let the frame end without netting an equalizer, however the home team snuck in the final tally with under a minute to play to hold a 2-1 lead. Molloy's Jack Egan was responsible for the visitor's second goal of the game, which happened to be the first of the second quarter to make it even at two-all. Michael Paccione sparked a three-goal run for the Brown and Gold at the 6:13 mark, extending their lead to 5-2 heading into the break. The scoring spree continued well into the third quarter, when a late second frame penalty carried over and granted Adelphi possession right from the start. Several missed shots flew before Kirby netted the next two goals for Adelphi, making the deficit greater for Molloy. Angelo Caiazzo made it a seven-goal contest when he snuck a shot past Michael Kessler, but Michael Scheuerer broke the silence on his goal with under five minutes left to play in the third. A turnover for the Lions saw several Adelphi defenders running up the field, with enough time for Kirby to find Justin Napolitano for his first goal of the season. The Panthers charged ahead with a comfortable lead in the fourth, netting the first two with another season-first from Devin Kennedy. The visitors were able to score three of the next five goals in the game over the remaining six minutes, largely in part to a few faceoff wins down the stretch. The deficit was too great to overcome however, and the Panthers improve to 5-0 with several top-20 opponents scheduled for the coming weeks. The men's team hits the road for a meeting at no. 17 Saint Anselm College on Saturday, March 16. Opening faceoff is set for noon. All live action will be available on NE10 NOW.
