Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team lost its first game of the season with a 14-8 setback to visiting No. 9/7 Towson on Saturday afternoon. The No. 16/18 Hoyas fall to 2-1 overall while the Tigers improve to 3-0 on the year. Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) led the Hoyas with three goals and an assist on the day for a team-high four points. His first goal of the game gave him 100 for his career, becoming just the eighth player in program history to reach the milestone. Jake Carraway (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) added two goals while Massimo Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y. / IMG Academy), Robert Clark (Cooksville, Md. / McDonogh) and Jack Elders (Tiburon, Calif. / Redwood) all had lone goals. Lucas Wittenberg (Kennesaw, Ga. / Harrison / Mercer) was credited with three assists as well. Defensively, Owen McElroy (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood [Avon Old Farms]) pulled in 11 saves for this third-straight double-digit save performance. Gibson Smith (Pelham, N.Y. / Pelham Memorial) posted team-bests with six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Georgetown jumped on the scoreboard first courtesy of Bucaro's milestone goal at the 12:38 mark in the opening frame. Towson responded just over a minute later but the Hoyas retook the lead on an Elders goal with 8:07 to play. The Tigers closed out the frame with consecutive goals, including a man-up score, to lead 3-2 after the first 15 minutes of play. An early goal in the second frame put Towson up 4-2, but back-to-back goals from Bucci and Clark knotted things up at 4-4. Echoing the first quarter, TU closed out the half with consecutive goals to lead 6-4 at the break. Georgetown pulled within a goal twice in the third, first from Bucaro's second goal and again with a Carraway score in an extra-man opportunity. Towson responded both times, however, and scored with 13 seconds left in the frame to lead 8-6. In the fourth, four consecutive goals from Towson over the course of the first nine minutes of the period gave the visitors a comfortable 12-6 lead. Bucaro and Carraway would add goals late in the frame, but not enough to complete the comeback attempt. Brendan Sunday led Towson with nine points (4G, 5A) while Timmy Monahan added a hat trick. Alex Woodall won 19 of 23 faceoffs and collected 13 ground balls. Tyler Canto hauled in 14 saves between the pipes. Georgetown returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Mount St. Mary's in its first road game of the season.
