Duke University scored all five third-quarter goals Thursday night to stretch a 6-3 halftime lead to 11-3 before going on to a 12-7 victory over second-ranked Loyola University Maryland in non-conference action at Koskinen Stadium. Brad Smith scored with 66 seconds left in the first off of a Joe Robertson assist, and he added his second of the night 1:25 into the third quarter. Nakeie Montgomery and Kevin Quigley scored once each, and Joey Manown tallied his third and fourth goals of the game to push the Blue Devils' lead to 11-3 with 44 ticks left in the third. Bailey Savio, who had nine ground balls and went 13 of 22 on face-offs for Loyola, stopped the run by winning the opening draw of the fourth and going to goal for his first tally of the season. That sparked a 4-0 Loyola run, but the Greyhounds ran out of time in their rally. Chase Scanlan scored a man-up goal off a Pat Spencer feed at 8:39, and he then assisted on the next two Loyola goals, throwing to Aidan Olmstead and John Duffy for scores at 4:01 and 3:05 that made it a four-goal game before Robertson scored the final goal of the game with under 90 seconds left. Duke (6-1 overall) had a 43-22 shot advantage in the game, and the Blue Devils controlled the ground balls with 35 to Loyola's 19 , despite Savio outperforming Duke at the face-off 'X.' Montgomery put Duke in front, 2-0, with a pair of goals in the opening four minutes, 11 seconds, but Loyola quickly came back to even the score at 2-2. Spencer scored an unassisted goal at 9:55, and he threw to Scanlan for his first of three goals on the night. Montgomery, however, completed a first-quarter hat trick with a goal 84 seconds before the end of the frame. Manown then scored the next two goals to give the Blue Devils a 5-2 lead with 9:19 on the second-quarter clock. Scanlan, who finished with three goals and two assists, scored unassisted on the left side 3:20 before halftime, but Smith's goal pushed the Duke lead back to three at the break. Jacob Stover made 15 saves in goal for the Greyhounds (4-2), giving him 110 in Loyola's last seven games, an average of 15.7 per contest. Spencer had a goal and two assists, driving his career point-total to 306. He moved past former Duke standout Jordan Wolf (2011-14) and Siena's Tony Asterino (1978-81) and into sole possession of 13th place on the NCAA Division I career points list. He is five shy of tying the school record of 311 set by Gary Hanley (1978-81). The Greyhounds will have the weekend off before playing their next game, a Saturday, March 16, home contest against the U.S. Naval Academy at Ridley Athletic Complex.
