Powered by a game-high five goals and seven points from sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), the No. 5 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 12-5 victory over Post University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Mavericks (6-0) continue their best start since 2013, while the Eagles (1-3) fall two games below .500. Scorcia added two assists and two caused turnovers. Freshman JoJo Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) netted four goals and five ground balls and senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) contributed two goals and four assists, including his 100th career goal. Senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) scored and junior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and freshman Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) dished out two assists each. Senior Anthony DeCeglia (Northport, N.Y./Nassau CC) had a game-high four caused turnovers and junior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 9-of-12 on faceoffs. Senior Nick Sehring (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) went 7-of-8 on faceoffs and senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made 12 saves to earn the win. Post was led by Carlos Chacua who had a goal and two assists. Manuele D'Alessio made nine saves to take the loss. Mercy opened the contest with the game's first two goals after back-to-back goals from Scorcia and MacSpadyen to make it 2-0 with 10:15 remaining in the first quarter. A Jake Bova goal made it 2-1 just under a minute later, but the Mavericks responded with three straight goals to take a 5-1 lead with 5:35 left in the opening quarter. Janavey started the rally and Chillianis followed with a man-up goal from MacSpadyen that made it 4-1. MacSpadyen ended the run with his second of the day and his 100th career goal. Corey Auten made it 5-2 before Scorcia scored two more goals in the final minute of play in the quarter to give Mercy a 7-2 lead after one quarter of play. Scorcia opened the scoring in the second quarter off an assist from MacSpadyen to make it 8-2 with 12:16 remaining in the quarter. Nearly ten minutes of scoreless action went by before Post scored at the 2:33 mark to make it 8-3 heading into halftime. A Sean Olsen goal to start the third quarter cut the Mercy lead to 8-4 at the 12:18 mark. Janavey scored his second goal of the day with 5:28 remaining in the quarter to put Mercy up 9-4 at the end of the third quarter.
