HILADELPHIA, Penn. – On a day where Max Tuttle became the fourth player in SHU's Division I history (since 2000) to reach the 100-career goal milestone, the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team responded in-kind with an offensive explosion to push past Furman, 18-11, from Radnor High School on Saturday morning. The Pioneers even their record at 1-1 on the season and improve to 3-0 all-time against Furman while the Paladins drop to 0-3 in 2019. Tuttle joins an exclusive list of Pioneers, that includes only Stephen Grabow '03 (129 career goals), Mike Mawdsley '14 (113) and Erick Perez '03 (105), to have scored 100 goals in SHU's 20-year Division I history. Needing four goals to hit 100 heading into today, Tuttle hit the milestone in style as he pumped in six goals (one off his career-high) with two assists to as he matched his single-game career-high with eight points. Even with the six-goal total, Tuttle wasn't the sole source of offense on the day for SHU as nine different Pioneers scored in the seven-goal victory. The 18-goal output is the highest single-game total for SHU since defeating Vermont 21-17 back on March 14, 2015 (61 games ago). SCORE Sacred Heart 18 / Furman 11 RECORDS Sacred Heart (1-1) / Furman (0-3) LOCATION Radnor High School / Philadelphia, PA SHU STAT LEADERS Goals: Tuttle 6, Liljeberg 3, Saggese and O'Reilly 2 Assists: Saggese 4, Tuttle and Liljeberg 2 Points: Tuttle 8, Saggese 6, Liljeberg 5, O'Reilly 3 Ground Balls: Tuttle and Liljeberg 11, Saggese 7 Caused Turnovers: Cipoletti 3, Tuttle 2 First Half (11-5 SHU) Momentum clearly swung in favor of the Pioneers right from the opening faceoff, as the Pioneers scored six of the first seven goals scored in the first quarter After failing to convert on their first four offensive possessions, the Pioneers followed with goals on six of their next eight trips down the field including a series of four straight to build the five-goal lead Bill Sledge started the scoring spree, netting his first career goal 5:37 into the game off a feed from Reed Avveduti The tandem of Tuttle, Saggese and Liljeberg combined to either score or assist on nine straight SHU goals, starting with Liljeberg feeding Connor O'Reilly at the seven-minute mark in the first SHU didn't make Furman pay for a wide array of penalties in the first half, as the Pioneers failed to convert on their first three man-up opportunities, all of which came in the first quarter It wasn't 1:20 had elapsed in the second quarter until SHU converted a man-up chance, as Liljeberg found the back of the net off a Tuttle feed Furman cut into the Pioneer advantage, riding a 3-1 scoring run to make it 9-5 SHU midway through the second quarter With momentum starting to turn, the high-scoring senior tandem swung play back in favor of the Pioneers as Tuttle pumped in his third goal of the first half with 4:48 remaining in the half while Saggese dished his third assist of the opening 30 minutes as he found Jaden Walcot with five seconds left in the frame to make it 11-5 Pioneers at the break Second Half (18-11 SHU) Armed with a six-goal advantage, Sacred Heart salted away the game scoring four of the first five goals in the second half to build their biggest lead of the game at 15-6 Tuttle made history to put the Pioneers up nine, as he received a feed from classmate Saggese on a man-up opportunity Mixed in with the scoring run was Liljeberg hitting a personal milestone as the sophomore midfielder netted his third goal, which also represented his fifth point, as he notched a hat trick for the first time in his career and tallied a new career-high five-point total Furman tried to make a game of it late, scoring four straight goals to open the fourth quarter and make it 16-11 with 8:31 remaining but Tuttle put in the game's final blow with a pair of strikes to push his total to six on the day NOTES Tuttle's six-goal total is tied for the fourth-highest single-game total in SHU's Division I program history while his eight-point total is tied for the third-highest single-game output After going for seven points (five goals, two assists) in the season opener at Georgetown, Saggese pumped in six points (two goals, four assists) to give him a team-leading 13 points through two games in 2019 Saggese's four assists was just one off his career-high of five which came in a win over Wagner on April 14, 2018 Junior goalkeeper Brooks Dutton registered 11 saves and a 50.0 save percentage to pick up the win in the cage With the win, Dutton moves into sole possession of second place all-time at SHU with 16 career victories Jake Giaquinto went 14-for-26 (53.8 percent) at the X for the Pioneers Another huge key to the victory came in the ground ball category as the Pioneers won the battle 65-49 on the day and posted a massive 42-22 advantage in ground balls through the first half of play To go along with career days on the offensive end, Tuttle and Liljeberg both set career-highs with 11 ground balls each The 11 ground balls apiece is tied for the sixth-highest single-game ground ball total in SHU's Division I history SHU outshot Furman 31-16 (+15) in the first half alone and 47-37 for the game Senior defender Joseph Cipoletti, the reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Week, put up four ground balls and three caused turnovers in a winning effort Sophomores Conor Sullivan (one goal) and Alex Weiss (one assist) each recorded their first career points in the win The seven-goal margin-of-victory marks the largest goal margin in a SHU non-conference win since defeating Mercer 17-7 back on March 8, 2011 NEXT GAME The Pioneers have a quick turnover as SHU is set for a two-game week, starting with their home opener on Tuesday (3 PM) against Boston University. A showdown with crosstown foe Fairfield follows on Saturday (1 PM). Both games will be played at Campus Field.
