Junior Jonathan Tesoro made 13 saves in the 2019 season opener but it wasn’t enough as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-5 decision to Providence College Saturday afternoon at Kuzniewski Field. Four different scorers registered goals for the Crusaders (0-1), who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening 68 seconds of the game. Rookie Will Spangenberg opened the team’s 2019 scoring with his first collegiate goal, an unassisted tally just 53 ticks in, while junior faceoff specialist Dan O'Connell doubled the home side’s lead just 15 seconds later. But the Friars (1-1) would score three straight to run the first-quarter clock down to the final 60 seconds before Connor Waldron took a pass from Kevin Kodzis to even the score at 3-3 with 18 seconds to go. But it was all PC from there, as the Friars scored seven uninterrupted goals spanning nearly two full quarters before the Crusaders would find the back of the net again – this time an unassisted Brad Baker tally with 10 seconds remaining in the third. Kodzis would net his own score in the fourth, but PC would walk away with the 12-5 decision behind a four-goal performance from Nick Hatzipetrakos. KEY MOMENTS: Q1 | HC 1, PC 0: Spangenberg netted his first collegiate goal and opened Holy Cross’ scoring for the 2019 campaign just 53 seconds into the season opener. Q1 | HC 2, PC 0: O’Connell would double the lead with an unassisted tally. Q1 | HC 3, PC 3: Out of a called timeout, Waldron evened the score off a feed from Kodzis with 18 seconds to go in the frame. NOTES & NUMBERS: O’Connell went 13-for-21 from the X, pulling in seven ground balls. He faced off against three different Friars in the game. Senior Matt Farrell posted a game-best eight ground balls and registered two of Holy Cross’ 10 caused turnovers. Senior attack Drew Babiak tied a game high, firing off eight shots in the season debut. Tesoro made nine of his 13 saves in the second half. PC outshot the Crusaders, 40-37, but Holy Cross took the ground ball edge, 34-26. Both teams went 0-for-2 with the extra man. UP NEXT: Holy Cross will travel to Vermont to take on the Catamounts on Feb. 16 at 12:00 p.m.
