CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team rallied to score eight unanswered goals to defeat Harvard in overtime, 11-10. With 9:10 remaining in the third quarter the Crusaders trailed, 10-3, but battled back and fired off eight goals to take down Harvard in overtime for the second-consecutive season. Harvard (0-3) tallied the first goal of the game at the 11:05 mark of the first quarter. Drew Babiak recorded his first of the day to equalize at 10:19. The Crimson posted two more goal to take a 3-1 lead. However, with 32 seconds remaining Holy Cross (2-2) rattled off two goals to even things up, 3-3. Babiak and Justin Lynskey were the goal scorers. In the second quarter, Harvard scored five goals to take an 8-3 lead. The third quarter saw more offense from the Crimson as they topped off at 10-3 with 9:10 remaining in the quarter. With 27 seconds remaining in the third, Holy Cross had another burst of offense. Sean Mullaney fired off goals at 27 seconds and 18 seconds. With three seconds to play, Connor Waldron recorded his first of the day and shortened the Harvard lead to 10-6. Waldron started off the scoring with 13:04 to play in the fourth quarter to continue the Crusader run, 10-7. Kevin Kodzis put Holy Cross within two at 8:13 and Sean Mullaney capped off his hat trick at 5:46 and pushed the game to 10-9. With 42 seconds to play, Kodzis scored the equalizer and send the game to overtime and was assisted on the play by Waldron. In regulation, Holy Cross outshot Harvard, 56-34. The first overtime period saw one shot from each team, both goalies rising to the occasion. Thirty seconds into the second overtime period, Will Spangenberg scored the game-winner on a back door shot. NOTES & NUMBERS: Dan O’Connell won 18-of-26 faceoffs, and 11-2 in the second half. Spangenberg has now scored in all four games for Holy Cross in the 2018 season. Jonathan Teosoro recorded 10 saves in the game. Harvard’s goalie posted 24 saves. The Crusaders went 15-for-15 on the clear. Harvard had 18 turnovers, five being caused by Holy Cross. The Crusaders had 15 turnovers in the game. CRUSADER LEADERS: Each Crusader who scored finished the game with at least two points. Sean Mullaney led Holy Cross with three goals and two assists for five points. Kevin Kodzis, Drew Babiak, and Connor Waldron all finished with two goals. Rookie Will Spangenberg scored the game-winning goal and added two assists. UP NEXT: Holy Cross will travel to No. 1 Loyola (Md.) on March 2 for a 3:30 p.m. game time.
