HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. scored three goals, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 18-7 men's lacrosse decision to nationally-ranked No. 7 Cabrini (Pa.) University on Tuesday at Hellmuth-Gibson Field. Classmate Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. added two assists for the host Tigers (3-2), who trailed just 5-3 at halftime. Jakob Klein had three goals and six assists, and Jordan Krug had four goals and one assist for the visiting Cavs (3-0) in the non-conference contest.
H-SC opened the scoring with an unassisted goal by sophomore Davis Hatch/Mechanicsville (1g) at 11:30, but CU answered with four-straight goals to lead 4-1 after one quarter. The Tigers battled back in the second quarter, taking a 2-1 advantage, to close to within 5-3 at the intermission. Freshman Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa. (1g) scored at 4:27, assisted by senior captain John Burke/Richmond (1a), and Medwar (3g) tallied his first goal at 2:50, unassisted.
CU took control in the third quarter, outscoring H-SC 8-2 for a 13-5 lead through 45 minutes. Junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. (1g) scored at 9:09 with an assist from O'Brien (2a), and Medwar scored at 5:27, also assisted by O'Brien. The Cavs continued their momentum in the fourth quarter, taking a 5-2 advantage, to provide for the final margin. The Tigers sandwiched their two goals before and after the five scored by the visitors … getting an unassisted goal from Medwar at 12:50 and another unassisted goal by freshman Max Koontz/Winston-Salem, N.C. (1g) with 41-seconds remaining.
Junior captain and goalkeeper Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. played the entire game, yielding the 18 goals in 60:00 while making 17 saves. Sophomore Canevin Wallace/Annapolis, Md. collected five ground balls, while senior John Klein/New Cumberland, Pa. had two caused turnovers. Freshman Presley Miller/Annapolis, Md. was 2-6 on face-offs.
H-SC will remain at home to welcome non-conference opponent Centre (Ky.) College on Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m.
