High Point (6-1) scored a program record 22 goals and logged a program record 37 points. The Panthers out-shot UMBC (1-4) 45-33 with 32 of High Point's shots coming on goal. HPU won a program record 31 face-offs and grabbed 53 ground balls, while the Retrievers had 22 ground balls. Redshirt senior Chris Young set a career-high and program record with seven goals, while sophomore Asher Nolting tied a career-high with five assists. Nolting tied a career-high with seven points (two goals, five assists). Junior Ben Baker added a career-high four goals and junior Dalton Sulver added a career-high three assists. "It's a team effort," HPU head coach Jon Torpey said. "I think everybody, for the most part, got a chance to play. I thought Kenny Broschart put together a great game plan. From the transition game to what we did in between to what we did in 6-on-6, I thought those guys were completely dialed in." The Panthers opened the game with a 4-1 lead with two goals coming from Baker and one from Young and senior Jake Schleppy. The Retrievers responded with a 3-0 run to tie the game at 4-4. Baker finished the hat trick with 1:35 left in the first quarter. Junior Ricky Koehler added one for HPU before the end of the quarter to give the Purple & White a 6-4. Young started the second quarter with two goals before UMBC scored its first. Baker added his fourth of the day to put High Point up 9-5 with 12:19 left in the second quarter. After the Retrievers scored one goal, the Panthers went on a 6-0 run to put HPU up 15-6 with goals coming from Young (2), Nolting, Sulver, junior Nate Carter and junior Colin Zimmerman. UMBC scored its seventh goal, then HPU added two goals before the half to take a 17-7 lead at the break. In the second half, the Panthers scored five goals, while UMBC logged six. "It's a byproduct of the game for Nolting and Young," Torpey said. "We put those guys in the right places and when we ask those guys to do things they do them. They finished the opportunities we put in front of them today. They did an excellent job of really just running the entire offense and getting everybody on the same page." Junior Davis Sampere led the Panthers with a career-high and program record 15 ground balls and logged 19 face-off wins. Senior Tim Troutner got the win for HPU in the cage and made nine saves. Redshirt sophomore Griffin Basile logged a career-high three saves, while freshman Antonio Arcona made the first save of his career for HPU. Schleppy, Koehler, Zimmerman, Sulver, Carter, sophomores Isaac Newland and Sean Coughlin and freshmen Hunter Vines and Michael Ippolito all scored one goal for High Point. Up next, the Panthers will begin conference play as they travel to Lexington, Va. to play VMI Friday, March 15. The opening face-off is set for 7 p.m.
