Junior Riley McNulty scored the game-winning goal for Coast Guard men's lacrosse with eight seconds remaining in the game to take down cross-town rival Connecticut College, 11-10 for the first time in series history on Wednesday night. The Bears improve to 6-2 on the season, while Conn. drops to 3-5. McNulty had five goals and three assists and senior Anthony Wyler added four goals and one assist to lead the Bears. Senior Jack Pope also added a pair of goals in the victory. Senior Tom Bleifuss caused two turnovers and grabbed five ground balls to lead the Bears defense. Brandon Plante and Jack Rutter both tallied hat tricks to lead the Camels, with Rutter also adding four assists. Sean Smith scored twice and Maxx Trotsky and Jordan Foster contributed with a goal each. Rutter scored the first goal of the game at 14:02 to give the Camels a quick, 1-0 lead. Pope answered for the Bears at 12:48 to give Coast Guard their first of the game. Rutter scored again for Conn. at 11:57 to take a 2-1 lead but Pope scored again to tie it, 2-2 and spark a six-goal run for the Bears, including a hat trick from McNulty and a pair from Wyler. Plante scored with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter but the Bears held a 7-3 advantage. The Camels outscored the Bears 2-1 in the second quarter, to trail 8-5. Conn. opened the third quarter with a goal at 11:48, followed by two more from Plante as he tied it 8-8 at 3:50 in the third. Wyler closed out the third quarter with a goal at 1:18 to take a 9-8 lead heading into the final quarter. Wyler scored again to open the fourth quarter at 14:15, to extend the Bears lead, 10-8. Smith scored back-to-back goals for the Camels to tie the game, 10-10 with 6:27 remaining. Following a failed clear by Conn. with 1:26 remaining, the Bears held on to possession taking three shots in the final seconds of the game. Geurtsen found an open McNulty, who fired away his fifth of the night with eight seconds remaining to give Coast Guard the 11-10 victory. Senior Trey Johnson made nine saves to backstop the Bears to victory. Colin Smith entered the game midway through the first quarter and made 13 saves for the Camels. Coast Guard outshot Conn. 48-32 and held a 31-22 advantage in ground balls. The Bears are back in action this Saturday, April 30 at 8:00 PM when they open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play against Clark.
