The Drexel men's lacrosse team (0-1) suffered a 15-14 overtime loss in the season opener from Vidas Field to the No. 16/13 High Point Panthers (3-0). The two teams jumped out to a high-scoring first quarter as the Dragons led 7-5 after 15 minutes. Drexel struck first in the opening 1:06 when junior Reid Bowering scored his first of the day on an assist from fellow junior Nick Fox. Drexel and High Point exchanged the next five goals to even it up at 3-3 midway through the first quarter. The Dragons then scored the next three to take a 6-3 advantage with two man-up goals. Drexel benefited and capitalized from High Point slashing and unnecessary roughness penalties as senior Matt Soran and junior Matthew Varian converted. In total, the Dragons scored seven goals in the first quarter, all from different players, as they led 7-5 after one. Senior Cam Harris and Varian scored the first two goals in the second quarter to put Drexel up 9-5 for their largest edge of the day. Harris' goal was helped by the strong first-half faceoff work by junior Jimmeh Koita who won 15-of-21 at the X in the opening half. The Panthers scored the next three to get back within one with under six minutes to go in the half, 9-8. Sophomore Ryan Genord converted a man-up opportunity with 3:33 left to play before Bowering notched his second of the day with a man down as he broke up a pass and scooped up the groundball before scoring with 1:07 on the clock as the Dragons took a 11-9 lead into halftime. After a combined 20 goals in the first half, the Dragons and Panthers scored four in each the third and fourth quarters as number of penalties dropped and the goalies stepped up. High Point outscored Drexel 3-1 in the third quarter to knot it all up after 45 minutes, 12-12. Drexel then came out quickly and scored the first two of the fourth as Bowering scored his third of the day before junior Collin Mailman delivered to put Drexel up 14-12 with 11:35 remaining. High Point evened the scored with goals at 6:56 and 5:29 as the two teams were all square for the final five minutes of action. Bowering and Mailman each got off shots in the last few minutes that were saved by the Panther goalie. Tied after 60 minutes, High Point prevailed in overtime with 41 seconds on the clock when Koby Russell scored with an assist from Asher Nolting to give the No. 16/13 Panthers the 15-14 win in overtime. Bowering led the Dragons with three goals, finishing with four points on the day. Senior Marshal King assisted on four goals and scored two himself as he owned a game-high six points. Varian and Genord also scored twice for Drexel while senior Christopher Friendman, Harris, Mailman, junior Nolan Fox and Soran each had one. Koita won 21-of-32 faceoffs on the day while grabbing a game-high 12 groundballs in the effort. Starting defensemen junior Will Stabbert and sophomore Sean Quinn followed him up with five groundballs apiece. Senior defenseman Matt Klinges tied for a game-high three caused turnovers on the day.
