There is something about playing the No. 10 team in the country that seems to bring out the best in the Haverford College men's lacrosse team. Ursinus was the latest to learn that lesson on Saturday as the Fords won 12-9 on the road to stay within striking distance of a playoff spot heading into the final week of the regular season. Ironically, Saturday's 12-9 score was the same final by which Haverford defeated a then-No. 10 Dickinson side to start the month of April. Strong play in the crease was once again crucial in Haverford's latest win over a top 10 foe as Ethan Donlon made 19 saves on 28 shots on goal, stopping 68% of the shots on goal that he faced. He made a career-high 23 saves in the aforementioned win against nationally-ranked Dickinson. Sean Mowatt-Larssen led the Fords' attack with four goals on 10 shots. Brian Geffroy also had two goals as a total of eight different Haverford players scored in the victory. The senior class played a huge role in setting up those strikes a Garret Trucksess dished out a career-high four assists while Rob McLallen added two more helpers. Haverford blitzed the host Bears on their home turf with the first five goals of the contest, each of which came during the first 11 minutes of game action. Mowatt-Larssen tallied the first two Haverford goals, as his tallies came just 39 seconds apart to start the scoring. Fellow first-year Wyatt Feinberg later converted on a man-up chance following McLallen's second assist. Geffroy tallied the first unassisted goal of the game to make it 4-0 before Gabe Moon scored the first goal of his young career with 4:15 remaining in the opening quarter. As could have been expected, Ursinus has earned its national ranking many times over during the year and it was not going down without a fight. The Bears countered with back-to-back goals just nine seconds apart. Geffroy's second goal of the day, and 14th this season, gave the Fords a 6-2 lead at the end of the opening period. Nevertheless, that goal didn't keep the Bears down for long as they scored the first three goals of the second quarter to make the score 6-5. Most of the goals on Saturday came during the first half as the two sides combined for 16 goals during the first 30 minutes, but just five more after the halftime break. Fortunately for the Fords, they were able to break that string of success for the Bears with four more snipes of their own. Mowatt-Larssen tallied twice more during that run which elapsed just over four minutes of playing time. The standout rookie now has 26 goals in his inaugural season. Seniors Ben Frost and Stephen DeLeo also scored during that stretch which extended Haverford's lead to 10-5 before Ursinus found the back of the cage just before the half. Frost now has 23 goals this season while his senior classmate has found the back of the cage 18 times this spring. After a basically even first half in terms of shots, Ursinus held a 25-19 advantage during the second half. However, Donlon continued to stand tall with 10 saves and just three goals against during the final 30 minutes. Goals from Ryan Tetro and Blake Brinster kept the Bears from coming any closer as Haverford's three-goal lead at the final buzzer was all the closer Ursinus would come in the second half. Haverford definitely made the most of its shot attempts throughout the day as the Fords scored on 12 of their 17 shots on goal. In addition to Donlon anchoring an overall strong defensive effort, nine different Fords collected multiple ground balls to help the Fords either gain or keep possession. On top of those hustle plays, Jonathan Frost and Colby Ferrigno each caused a pair of turnovers on the defensive end. Zack Cohen won 10 of the 23 face-off attempts to tie with Trucksess for the team lead with five ground balls. Men's lacrosse now wrap up the regular season next Saturday at home against Swarthmore. That game, which will also be Senior Day for the 12 members of the Fords' graduating class, is set to get underway at 3:30 p.m. on Swan Field. In addition to the annual Alumni Game with Swarthmore that day, Haverford will be dedicating the Geoff Geppert '15 Memorial Staircase in a ceremony that will begin at 10:30 a.m. by the newly-installed staircase in his memory.
