Senior Jack Santilli stopped 11 shots and the Union College men's lacrosse team scored the only five goals of the fourth quarter to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a contest between nationally-ranked teams at East Campus Arena. The No. 15 Dutchmen improve to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in the Liberty League, while the No. 16 Engineers drop to 10-3 and 4-2. The game was tight throughout with neither team getting ahead by more than two goals until Union led 11-8 with 9:25 remaining in the third quarter. However, RPI battled back to tie the score at 11-11 on goals from Will Hatcher at 6:27, JT Kelly at 5:50 and Owen Putman at 4:51. Union regained the lead on a Kerry Lyne marker, but Lucas Bastarache tied the score at 12-12 heading to the final frame. Union's Hayden Frey put the Dutchmen ahead 2:15 into the frame after he collected a pass from Lyne and scored. Jimmy Connelly tallied 5:05 later and Keaton McCann made it 15-12 with 6:33 to play. Lyne completed a pass from Eric Zimm with 5:05 to play before Frey scored unassisted with 2:44 left to go. The win was the seventh straight for the Dutchmen, who are tied for first place in the conference. Lyne finished with five points on three goals and two assists, while Zimm (1 goal, 2 assists) and Brian Davis (2 goals, 1 assist) both had three points. Senior Alex Newhouse won 15 of 19 faceoffs and Patrick Regan was successful on 10 of 14. Newhouse had eight ground balls and Regan secured three. Connelly had six pickups to go with his goal. Santilli made two fourth quarter saves and five in the second half. He also picked up four ground balls in the game. Rensselaer, which jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by JP McGrady and Hatcher 5:32 into the game, was led by Bastarache, who had two goals and two assists with a team-high seven ground balls. Hatcher and Will Killeen scored twice each and Nicki Phelps had six ground balls. Brian Doughty (5 saves) and Kyle Botsford combined to make 14 saves for Rensselaer, which lost to Union for the first time since 2015. The Engineers return to action on Saturday when they host Clarkson University at 2pm. Union also plays again on Saturday when it travels to Vassar College for a 1pm faceoff.
