The acronym for the position is FOGO, which stands for face-off and "get off." TD Ierlan, Yale's FOGO, didn't always get off the field today, but he was crucial in getting the Bulldogs a victory. Facing a team that had scored 61 goals in its first three games, the No. 6 ranked Yale Men's Lacrosse Team registered a gut-wrenching, 14-13 win over second-ranked Penn State before a packed house at Reese Stadium. Ierlan won 25 of 31 face-offs, scored a goal and helped the Elis secure their first win of the year by controlling possession time against a high-flying offense. "What TD did was just absolutely ridiculous," said a jubilant Yale Head Coach, Andy Shay. "I thought if we could get 50/50, we had a shot." The most memorable win on the X came at the start of the third quarter. Ierlan and Penn State's Gerard Arceri were locked for more than 40 seconds before the ball came out. "We were just looking for that little inch and luckily I could pull it out…my wings did a great job boxing them out and giving me the space I needed to exit," said Ierlan, a junior All-American who transferred from Albany. Shay felt like that battle fueled the Bulldogs. "I feel like our bench got into it a little bit more. And when he won it, that was a good moment for us." Jackson Morrill had 2 goals and 7 points and Matt Gaudet and Brendan Rooney each hit the net 3 times as the home team overcame a pair of early, two-goal deficits before seizing the momentum in the second quarter with a 4-goal surge that put Yale up 6-4. The momentum swing could also be attributed to a defensive adjustment. Sophomore All-American Chris Fake and juniors Aidan Hynes and Will Weitzel helped hold off a potent PSU attack. The Nittany Lions (3-1) evened things at 7-7 in the third before the Bulldogs sandwiched a pair of 3-goal runs around one PSU tally to take a 13-8 lead early in the final frame. Penn State would not go away. The visitors scored 4 of the game's last 5 goals, including their 13th with 56 seconds left. The most important face-off was the 31st and final. Irelan didn't take long to come out with the ball before his teammates ran out the rest of the clock. Yale gets another big test a week from today at home when UMass comes to Reese for a 1 pm game.
