The Tufts University men's lacrosse team tied a program record for goals in a NESCAC game with their 25-12 victory over Trinity College this afternoon at Bello Field. Senior defenseman Brian Powers assisted on two goals today. Senior co-captain Danny Murphy scored a career-high 11 points as he matched his all-time high with seven goals and added four assists. The 11 points are tied for third-most in a single game in program history. Thirteen players scored goals for the Jumbos (8-0, 3-0 NESCAC) overall and 18 recorded points. The Bantams (4-3, 0-3) were led by three goals and an assist from senior Ben Knaus. Trinity had the first shot on goal today which was saved by Tufts sophomore starter Joe Theuer. The Jumbos then scored on their first three shots to get going. Sophomore Bryce Adam scored twice and senior co-captain Ben Connelly had the other. Knaus scored for Trinity with five minutes remaining in the first quarter to make it 3-1. However, the Jumbos would get the next six goals and led 9-1 early in the second quarter. Senior John Cordrey's goal with 22 seconds left in the quarter gave the Jumbos a 7-1 lead at the first break. Junior Max Waldbaum scored twice during the six-goal run and Murphy had a goal with two assists. Trinity senior Teddy Myers scored to stop Tufts' run at 10:48 of the second period. The Jumbos then netted goals 30 seconds apart by Murphy and sophomore defenseman Jack Walton to take an 11-2 advantage. The Bantams would tally the next three though, with Knaus scoring and assisting as the visitors closed to 11-5. Tufts was four for four on man-up advantages in the second quarter to stem any Trinity momentum. Waldbaum scored from Murphy with the extra man for the final goal of the half giving Tufts a 12-5 lead. Freshman Connor McCulloch scored two minutes into the second half to get Trinity within six at 12-6. However, seven of the next eight goals were by the Jumbos which amounted to a 19-7 lead early in the fourth. Murphy had four during that stretch. Trinity had another three-goal run early in the fourth quarter with sophomore Drew Kozub, senior face-off man Scott Morgan and junior Ben Ferrucci scoring to make the score 19-10. Jumbo freshman Mac Bredahl scored his first collegiate goal with 6:24 left in the fourth. The record-tying 25th goal was scored by freshman Cam Kelleher with 4:35 on the clock. Tufts tied the mark they orginially set with 25 goals in wins over Amherst in 2014 and Hamilton in 2015. Knaus wrapped up the scoring for Trinity at 2:43 of the final period. Tufts took a remarkable 73 shots, their most since the 2015 season. They put 43 on goal as Bantam goalkeepers Brady Burke (16 saves) and Greg Barletta combined for 18 stops. The Jumbos won the groundball battle 48-31 with Waldbaum collecting six, Walton four and junior Evan Kulpan four. Senior Alexander Notman finished with five for Trinity. Waldbaum scored three goals and had two assists, while Samuelson added two goals and two helpers for the hosts. Sophomore Kyle Helfrich was 18 for 31 on face-offs and senior Stewart Stockdale caused three turnovers. Theuer finished with 10 saves in 54 minutes. Myers with two goals and an assist, and Morgan with a goal and two assists joined Knaus as Bantam offensive leaders. The Jumbos are off until traveling to Connecticut College for a conference game next Saturday at 1 pm. Trinity hosts Wheaton in non-league play Tuesday night.
