High Point senior goaltender Tim Troutner Jr. made 19 saves and the Panthers outscored Duke 7-3 in the fourth quarter to upset the No. 2 Blue Devils 13-9 at Koskinen Stadium in midweek men’s lacrosse action. The Blue Devils fall to 1-1 on the young season, while the Panthers remain unbeaten at 2-0. They have scored 13 goals in both of their victories. “High Point was the better team,” said head coach John Danowski. “They had the better athletes, they were hungry. They outcoached us, they outplayed us and they were much better.” After trading goals through the first 45 minutes, Duke and High Point headed into the fourth quarter knotted at six apiece. It was fifth tie of the game that featured six overall ties and four lead changes. “I thought we played with a tremendous lack of skill, lack of discipline and that falls on me,” Danowski said. “I was fooled. I thought we were different, but we need work.” Reilly Walsh broke the 6-6 draw just 35 seconds in the final frame off of a pass from Joey Manown. Walsh finished the night with a goal and an assist, while Manown had a career-high matching four goals and five points. Hoping Walsh’s goal would shift momentum in favor of Duke, High Point had other ideas as it responded with six goals over the next 4:40 to grab its largest lead of the game at 10-7. The Panthers, led by David Sampere at the X, won 7-of-12 faceoffs in the period, including winning five of the six during the 6-0 run. Four different Panthers scored during that stretch to ice the victory. Duke made it 12-9 with 4:12 left to play, but struggled to get and maintain possession as High Point closed out the game with an empty net goal with 2:12 left in the game. Jake Seau continued his red-hot start to 2019 with two goals and three points. He has seven points on the season, just four shy of matching his total from the three previous seasons. In goal, Turner Uppgren made 10 saves, including six in the first quarter. Brian Smyth was 13-of-25 at the faceoff and picked up six ground balls. Duke returns to action on the road at Jacksonville, Feb. 9. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m.
