CHESTNUT HILL, MASS.—Record-book editors will be putting in their fair share of overtime following second-seeded North Carolina's offensive performance in Wednesday's Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinal game. Paced by tournament- and school-record performances by sophomore Jamie Ortega and junior Katie Hoeg, the Tar Heels pulled away from seventh-seeded Virginia Tech for a 19-9 win in Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinal action at Alumni Stadium. Ortega set ACC Championship single-game records with eight goals and 12 points, and Hoeg's six assists set another single-game tournament mark. The 12 points by Ortega were also a UNC school record, and her eight goals tied the school mark (both set in 2002 by Kellie Thompson). Ortega now has a UNC school-record 90 points this season, breaking the previous record of 89 set in 2018 by Hoeg. UNC's 14 total team assists tied another tournament single-game record. Throw in a career-high six goals by freshman Tayler Warehime, and it added up to a good night for the Tar Heels, who scored at least 17 points for the fourth time in their last six games. UNC (13-3) moves on to Friday's 8 p.m. semifinal game against sixth-seeded Duke, which beat third-seeded Notre Dame, 14-13, on Wednesday. Paige Petty scored four goals – all in the first half – to lead Virginia Tech (8-10). The teams traded goals at the outset of the match, which saw five ties in the first 19 ½ minutes. But after trailing 6-5, the Tar Heels blitzed the Hokies with five unanswered goals to grab a 10-6 lead with 7:51 remaining in the first half. Petty closed out the first-half scoring with her third and fourth goals, bringing Virginia Tech to within 10-8 at the break. Ortega (four goals) and Warehime (three) combined for the bulk of the Tar Heels' first-half scoring. UNC outshot Virginia Tech 21-12 in the first half, but all 12 of the Hokies' attempts were on goal. The second half quickly veered sharply in the Tar Heels favor as Warehime's fourth and fifth goals of the game – sandwiched around the fifth by Ortega – upped UNC's lead to 13-8 in the first 4:13, and UNC cruised on from there. Ortega's eight goals broke the previous ACC Championship game mark of seven set four times previously most recently by Duke's Charlotte North in last year's quarterfinal match versus Virginia Tech. The 12 points broke the previous Championship record of 10 set by Maryland's Jen Adams against UNC in the 1999 semifinals. Ortega has registered 28 points (23 goals and five assists) in four career ACC Tournament games. Hoeg topped the previous single-game record of five assists, first set by Maryland's Alex Aust versus Virginia Tech in 2012 and matched by Hoeg last year against Syracuse. UNC's 14 team assists were two more than the previous mark of 12 set by the Tar Heels against Virginia in the 2011 ACC Championship's opening round. Ortega now has 66 goals in 16 matches this season, while Hoeg upped her team-leading assist total to 56. NOTABLES • Carolina is 29-0 all-time against Virginia Tech, including 7-0 in the ACC Tournament. • Hoeg had six assists in the game to finish the game with a school-record 56 this season. Hoeg broke her own program record of 50, set last year. • Hoeg's 115 career assists rank second in school history to Ela Hazar's 121. • Taylor Moreno (13-3) started the game and played 54:06 minutes in goal, making 10 saves. Elise Hennessey played 5:54 minutes in the cage and made one save. • UNC out-shot the Hokies, 35-21. QUOTABLE UNC head coach Jenny Levy After the Game: "We're obviously excited about the win today. Virginia Tech's record doesn't show what a tough, scrappy team they are, and we knew that coming in, so we didn't take them lightly. It was a total team win, we needed a lot of people. Elise [Hennessey] went in for awhile, Taylor [Moreno] came back in, we used different defenders, different middies and different attackers. It took everybody tonight to dial in, but we also learned that when we play a team game we're really good. We're excited about whoever we play on Friday and moving on."
