America East Tournament Most Valuable Player Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scored the game-winning goal with 66 remaining as the fourth-seeded UMBC Retrievers edged second-seeded Vermont, 14-13, in the 2019 league championship game. The Retrievers (6-8), who had to win at Hartford on the final day of the regular season to make the four-team field, earned the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2009. "I am really proud of our guys' resiliency all season," said head coach Ryan Moran. "What you saw on the field today was just not an isolated incident… I was extremely happy to see them rewarded on the biggest stage." Patschorke, a sophomore attackman and junior linemates Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta) each scored four goals for the victors. Frawley, and seniors Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) and Gunnar Schimoler (Edgewater, Md./South River) joined Patschorke on the All-Tournament Team. The Retrievers erased a 10-6 third quarter deficit with a five-goal scoring run to take an 11-10 lead on a McIntyre goal with 8:21 remaining. Vermont tied the game a minute later, but McIntyre took a brilliant feed from Nolan and scored from close range to give the visitors a 12-11 advantage with 6:02 remaining. Vermont's Thomas McConvey sandwiched a pair of goals around sophomore Steven Zicheli's (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) tally and the Catamounts' second score knotted the game at 13-all with 2:35 remaining. UMBC, which won six of nine fourth-quarter draws, captured the ensuing face-off and drew a penalty on the Catamounts as they set up the offense. With the shot clock running down, Patschorke took the ball from the goal-line left and slipped a tight, sharp-angled shot past Vermont netminder Nick Washuta. "It's a set we work on with a few seconds left on the shot clock," said Patschorke of the game-winning goal. "When I had the ball in my stick, I knew my looks from practice and I just executed." UMBC will learn of its fate via the NCAA Selection Show, which will air live on ESPNU at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 5. The first half was marked by huge swings in goal-scoring and adversity for both teams. The Catamounts took a quick 3-0 lead just 2:54 into the game, and on the third goal, UMBC America East Second Team member Colin Kasner (Crofton, Md./DeMatha) had to be assisted from the field due to injury. The Retrievers fought back as McIntyre (5:15) and Frawley (7:02) scored, but the Catamounts equalized on two goals within 11 seconds to grab a 5-2 lead. However, UMBC took advantage of an ensuing three-minute non-releasable penalty against the Catamounts. UMBC scored two man-up goals, the first by Frawley with 59 seconds to play in the first quarter and the second by McIntyre just 23 seconds into the second quarter. The Retrievers extended the run to 4-0 on back-to-back scores from Patschorke and took their first lead at 6-5 at the 5:41 mark. But Vermont regained control, finished the half on a 4-0 run and led, 9-6, at the break. UMBC earned its fourth America East title (2006, 2008, 2009, 2019) and will make its seventh appearance in the NCAA Championships. Frawley added a pair of assists and produced six points, while McIntyre and Patschorke each recorded an assist. Nolan led the Retrievers with three assists. Freshman netminder Jack Morton (Ellicott City, Md./Boys' Latin) earned his third consecutive victory as part of UMBC's season-long winning streak. He made five saves, as the Retrievers outshot the Catamounts, 40-34. Classmate Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) won 12-of-22 draws, including all six in the fourth quarter. UMBC won for the first time this season when trailing after any quarter of play.
