Tenth-ranked James Madison used a nine-goal run in the first half and a stout defensive effort to upend Hofstra 13-3 to win the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday afternoon at Sentara Park. The Dukes improve to 16-3 on the year and win the league's tournament title for the third straight year - a program first - as well as for a league-best 12th time. The Pride fall to 12-7 on the year, as JMU is now 3-1 against Hofstra in CAA title games. JMU will learn its NCAA Championship fate tonight at 8 p.m. during the live selection show on NCAA.com. The Dukes set a CAA Championship record for fewest goals allowed in a CAA title game, and it was the program's largest margin of victory in a championship final. Junior attacker Maddie McDaniel headlined the CAA Championship All-Tournament Team, as she was voted Most Outstanding Performer after back-to-back four-goal performances, to go with averaging eight draw controls per tournament outing. She is the third straight JMU draw specialist to win the CAA Championship MOP, joining Haley Warden, who won the award in both 2017 and 2018. Four Dukes in all were named All-Tournament, as McDaniel was joined by senior attacker Hanna Haven, senior defender Caroline Sdanowich and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Molly Dougherty. Haven led the title game with five points on three goals and two assists, finishing the weekend with five goals and three helpers. Sdanowich forced three caused turnovers and won three draw controls in each game, as she and the JMU defense snapped a 28-game goal streak for the nation's leading scorer in Hofstra's Alyssa Parrella. Dougherty was solid between the pipes, making 12 saves with an 80% save percentage against Hofstra. For the week, she had a 68% save percentage, making 17 saves with a 4.0 goals against average. Four Dukes recorded multi-goal games in the title game, as McDaniel and Haven were aided by junior attacker Logan Brennan, who had three goals and an assist, and sophomore attacker Daria Lucchesi, who notched a pair of goals. On defense, JMU had eight different players cause at least one turnover, led by Sdanowich's three, and 10 players collected at least one ground ball, led by three from the trio of Dougherty, junior midfielder Kelsey Reed and freshman midfielder Rachel Matey. JMU surged out to an early lead, using a 9-0 run in a span of 13:41 to snag a 10-1 advantage with 10:18 to go in the first half. The Dukes held Hofstra without a goal for 15:22 during the run and later led 10-2 at the break. JMU stretched the lead to 10 on two occasions in the second half, and Hofstra was limited to just one goal, as the visitors' last score ended a drought of over 29 minutes late in the game. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE JMU held a 26-17 shots advantage, including 23-15 in shots on goal. The Dukes held hustle-stat leads in draw controls (10-8) and ground balls (19-15), while Hofstra held an edge in caused turnovers (11-10). On the caused-turnover front, Sdanowich became the fourth player in program history to reach 100 career caused turnovers, as she's now at 101. Both teams committed 16 turnovers, and JMU forced Hofstra into six failed clears on 19 attempts. They also combined for 22 saves, including 12 by Dougherty and 10 from Hofstra's Jess Smith. JMU improved to 12-6 all-time in CAA championship games and 11-1 all-time in tournament games played in Harrisonburg. The Dukes improved to 13-0 this season when out-shooting opponents and when scoring at least 11 goals. JMU has won three straight tournament titles for the first time in school history, joining Towson (2012-14) as the only other women's lacrosse team to win three straight CAA titles. JMU is making its 16th NCAA Championship appearance this year, marking the fifth straight season JMU is in the field. That is just the second time JMU has made five consecutive NCAA appearances (1997-01).
