WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Keene State College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 5 Williams in the NCAA second round 21-10 at Farley-Lamb Field. With the loss, the Owls season ends at 11-6 overall. Records Keene State: 11-6 Williams: 16-3 How It Happened Williams came out of the gate red hot, as the Ephs grabbed the first three goals of the contest. Brendan Hoffman started the scoring when he fired in a goal on a man up chance just one minute in, before Corey Lund added to the lead three minutes later. Williams third straight goal came on another man up opportunity, as Hoffman scored his second of the day to give the hosts a three goal edge. Keene State regrouped quickly, as Shane Molloy put the visitors on the board when he took a Connor Nolan feed and blasted in a goal from distance. Dave Wiedenfeld continued his fantastic 2019 season when he scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to one. With 5:11 to go in the opening quarter, the Ephs extended their lead back to two goals when John Hincks found the back of the net. The story of the quarter was how the Owls kept bouncing back, Michael Fritschy became the third different Owl to score when he took off from behind the net and finished off an acrobatic solo effort past the Ephs netminder. With just 16 seconds left in the quarter, Wiedenfeld tied things up when he scored his second goal of the game. The back and forth affair continued into the second quarter, as the Owls took their first lead of the day off a solo effort from defenseman Travis Hamilton. Wiedenfeld then made it four straight for KSC when he finished off a first half hat-trick to etxtend the lead to 6-4. With just over three minutes remaining in the half, Kevin Stump joined the goal scoring sheet when he finished off two straight goals for the Ephs to tie it up at 6-6 at halftime. Keene State came out of the locker room with a plan as Wiedenfeld continued his offensive masterclass. The junior gave the Owls a 7-6 lead when he took a Gabe Cormier pass and found the net, he then completed a solo effort for his fifth goal of the game. With 6:57 to go, the hosts responded on a man down opportunity, after winning the faceoff, the Ephs gained possession and found Kevin Stump who put away his third of the game. Jordan Caito then answered right back for KSC, as he brought the lead back to two goals for the away side. The turning point in the contest was a Corey Lund goal, which set the hosts on a six goal run to end the quarter. Lund's goal was followed by goals from Strauss, Lund again, Strauss, Alex Kitt and Michael Greenberg. The red hot end to the quarter gave the hosts a 14-9 lead heading into the final frame. With their largest lead of the day, the Ephs only needed 15 more minutes to close out KSC. The Owls struck first in the quarter however, as Anthony Marcella scored his first of the day. The Ephs quickly answered with a man down goal, by Kevin Stump, and a man up finish by Hoffman. Williams continued to tack it on, as three more goals poured in from Lund, Hincks and Kitt to extend their lead to 19-10. With just 1:56 remaining, Tim Saffold put away his first of the game, before the freshman tacked on another with just 56 seconds to go. 21-10 proved to be the final score, as No. 5 Williams used a huge third quarter run to advance past Keene State and into the next round. Inside the Crease Kevin Stump led Williams with five goals, Corey Lund had four goals and one assist and Brendan Hoffman finished with a hat-trick. Dave Wiedenfeld led KSC with five goals, while five other players scored (Molloy, Caito, Hamilton, Fritschy and Marcella). Harry Gahagan picked up the win in net making 10 saves. Chase Chamberlin had 11 saves in the loss. Williams won 20 faceoffs to the Owls 12. The Ephs were 4/11 on man up chances while KSC finished 0/5. Williams outshot Keene State 48-32.
